Black Mushroom by olivetreeann

Black Mushroom

From our photo walk at Hermes Paradise Nature Preserve.

I'm not sure what kind it is, but black is its natural color.
Wild! Like something from a fairytale.

InCredibly unusual looking mushroom! The black color shows up nicely in contrast to the green background of your photo

@allie912 @louannwarren @golftragic @onewing @grammyn @henrir

Thank you Allison, Lou Ann, Marnie, Babs, Katy, and Henri. And I agree with those who think it's not edible. I don't remember if the naturalist was saying it was, but even if it was, who would want to eat something that looked as unappealing as this?!

Interesting mushroom. The contrast is lovely.

@olivetreeann There is a similar-looking 'mushroom' used in Chinese cuisine. I think it's called 'cloud ears' or 'wood fungus', but not sure.

Thank you Diane, Kerri, Wendy, Kathy, and Kathy!

@golftragic I don't think I've ever had them- but then- I usually stick with things I know and tend not to experiment with Chinese food.

@haskar Thank you Haskar- I like those names much better too- thanks for the info!
