Get ready for a week of owl and eagle shots! I hobbled around the Carbon County Environmental Education Center today with a group of photographers to take shots of some beautiful birds including this beauty- a Barred Owl. We have had them in the woods behind our house and I can sit on the back deck and listen to them for a good half hour- I just love their call (Who cooks for Yooooooou?) But I've never been able to see one even when they're close as most of the time it's dark. But today, this one was a super model!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was really excited to see all the views, comments and favs on this one! What's great about this shot is that you'd think she was way up in the tree, but actually it's a very low branch and you can't see the tether from this angle. But even without the tether she wouldn't be able to fly very far as one of her wings is too weak. Like many of the birds at the center, this lovely was hit by a car. She's back to health but wouldn't be able to survive very well in the woods, so she has a new job in educating the public.
As for the hobbling- well, I probably shouldn't have done it but I just couldn't pass this up! I am probably looking at some sort of surgery in December because in spite of following all the doctor's instructions, I don't really feel like anything has improved over all. So since it wasn't too stressful (no long hikes or anything) to take part in this shoot, I decided I might as well because it wouldn't change the outcome.
I must have missed the hobbling story, Ann? I hope things improve either before or after surgery. I remember my knee was killing me for 3-4 months earlier this year for no apparent reason. Luckily after a cortisone shot and my chiropractor, it is back to normal now.
A lovely picture of this owl. I've never seen one close up. I got a plus by commenting so late, I got to read your about this injured bird and am so glad she is ok. as for you, Ann I hope you don't have to have surgery.
@gardenfolk I have a torn meniscus. It should be healing by now but I don't think it's made much progress so I have a feeling I'll be looking at some surgery in December. Hopefully it will be the orthroscopic kind and less invasive.
@lynnz Thank you Lynn! The handlers were so helpful in spotting places to perch the birds so we could get backgrounds like this.

Thank you so much for sending this to the PP!

Thank you Kathy, Bruni, and Haskar!
@bruni Me too Bruni but it doesn't look promising right now.
