Did you know that the original title of today's song was "One Horse Open Sleigh"? Piggy's glad it eventually became "Jingle Bells" since it's too cold for a pig with a tube around her tummy to go riding in an open sleigh now. It's much more fun to pose in the middle of all those golden bells!
We also learned that two "facts" about Jingle Bells were most likely not true. The first is the claim that the song was written in Medford Massachusetts in 1857. It can't be true because James Lord Pierpont the author was serving as an organist and choir director in Savannah Georgia at the time.
The second "myth" is that Jingle Bells was written for a children's choir to sing in Sunday School. This is also incorrect as the song has nothing to do with church at all!
What you get from the song is a good idea of what life was like in America near the turn of the century. Sleighs gliding through the snow didn't make much noise so bells were often attached to the horse's harness to help avoid collisions. A sleigh ride was also an acceptable way for a young couple to catch a few moments unchaperoned. These little glimpses of Americana show up in the lyrics.
Piggy looks fabulous amongst all that glitter and itโs fun to see her reflected on those bells too! I like the way you processed the photo and I love the fun facts you included
Thank you Lou Ann, Dawn, Ferry, Kathy, Katy, Wendy and Henri! Piggy and I are glad you're enjoying the Critter Carols and the stories behind the songs. We've enjoyed learning about them too!
