We have been in Newcastle all day today and I thought this photo of the Ocean Baths would be appropriate for the black and white fortnight theme of water.
The Ocean Baths were officially opened in 1922 when the pavilion was built although I believe the actual baths were there earlier.
@beryl@ibt@gigiflower@creampuff@lpot1985@karlow75@newbank@sioux@chimfa@pcoulson@happypat@hermann@paulaw@scarybird Sorry for the group reply again, but I was out all day yesterday and didn't get chance to catch up with any of your photos. Will try now before I have to go out again.
It was a bit choppy on the ocean yesterday, but not bad weather for winter. I think the temperature reached 19 degrees c. Just after I took this photo I spotted two people swimming, so there were two brave souls in Newcastle.
Yes Sam the tide is out. In the foreground are the rock pools and then just beyond them is Nobby's beach which is a sandy beach.
Another ocean baths at Mereweather just along the beach is being refurbished at the moment and I believe Newcastle baths is also having an update too.
@eyesmile No Gena. It is just an ocean baths. I think the idea initially was to have a safe place to swim for families. No hot springs either, it is bloody cold. Just plain ocean water. The pavilion was built in 1922 but I think the actual baths was there in about 1910.
Looks a bit chilly!
