Today David and I went up to the rocks at Boat Harbour to watch the whales. David missed out on yesterdays display because he went to a friend's house to play model trains. Shouldn't really say play, but that is what they did.
There were lots of whales again passing us by, but none were breaching, unfortunately, but at least they were a little bit closer to the shoreline.
How amazing to see them from land. We went on a trip out in a boat some years back off the coast of Plymouth MA and were fortunate to see lots of them breaching, I couldn't believe the amazing experience of seeing them in the wild and it really moved me which I wasn't expecting at all. Wonderful capture Babs.
@wordpixman I remember my Mum and Nanna telling me about whale meat and they used to joke about the song by Vera Lynn and changed the lyrics to "Whale meat again". instead of we'll meet again.
@onlyme111@888rachel@creampuff Thanks so much, we are so lucky to be able to see them from the land. We saw quite a few dolphins too, playing in the surf.
@elaine55 Thanks Elaine. I am sure you will be able to see them around the Sydney area. We spotted about 30 or more on sunday and another 30 or so on Monday too. That was from Barry Park at Fingal Bay on Sunday and Boat Harbour on Monday. You don't have to wait long before you spot some.
Apparently the white whale Migaloo passed by the Fingal Bay area on Saturday, so missed him by a day. Would love to see him. Maybe when he travels back down again in September or October.
@jackie8@darthkitty@paulaw@gerry@gigiflower@lilminimonka@eyesmile@almondjoy1@angelar@beryl@yaorenliu@michaelelliott Thank you all so much for your lovely comments on my whale photos. They are not the best photos in the world, but we are so lucky to see so many whales at the moment as they migrate north from the Antarctic for the winter. The really good thing is that we get to see them again in about September/October as they travel south again with their babies. Apparently there are about 17 or 18 thousand whales which travel up the east and west coasts of Australia each season.
@onewing ... yes indeedy! That song, and its modified word, became something of an earworm ... and it still wriggles and niggles more than half a century later, as does the memory of that unpleasant fishy-oily meat!
@nanm@april16@annied@golftragic@pcoulson@lafish Thanks so much. Yes we are lucky to be able to see them pass by from the land.
This was taken at Boat Harbour, not far from where your friend lives at Birubi Annie. You can see the surf club from the rocks where we were.
@kathiecb They are amazing to see in the flesh. We do go out on whale watch cruises sometimes here, but you can see them so easily from the shore. The day before this and this day we saw about 40 whales pass by each time.
