Has anyone ever seen a lorikeet tree? by onewing

Has anyone ever seen a lorikeet tree?

I am hibernating today as it is freezing cold. I believe it has reached the dizzy height of 15 degrees C today (59 F). The sun is shining and the sky is blue, but the wind is icy.

Yesterday afternoon just before the temperatures dropped and the wind swept through a gang of rainbow lorikeets landed in our garden, probably to let us know that the weather was about to change.

All the leaves have mostly gone from our frangipani tree now, but the colour has been replaced with rainbows.

This is only half of the flock which landed and about the same number again are on the ground. The noise they were making was deafening.

I put some bread out for them and it lasted about 2 minutes and then they all flew off.

Great shot Babs, make sure you pick them when they are ripe, they may lose their colour.

Great metamorphosis from a Frangipani to Rainbow tree, lol
I can imagine the noise, they are very colourful beautiful birds.

Sam
Instant FAV Babs..........when in bloom your frangipani tree must be glorious! The perfume, oh the perfume!! When I was little, I used to put the flowers behind my ears and pretend I was in Hawaii!!! This has made me laugh a lot........I've also stayed indoors all day as it hasn't stopped raining!
June 29th, 2014
Fabulous!
June 29th, 2014
Interesting to have berries in such stark branches. Good find.
June 29th, 2014
Wow this is fantastic.. I can imagine the noise.. we have about 3-4 that swing by here every now and then.. nice replacement for leaves and flowers from the frangipani... fav

June 29th, 2014
Excellent pic. fav
June 29th, 2014
Would love these in my garden, it would cost me loads of money because I would be feeding the all the time, What colour...Fav.
June 29th, 2014
@annied Oh its easy Annie. All you have to do is feed four of them and then they go off and tell all their friends. Nothing to it. Thanks for the fav.
June 29th, 2014
@karlow75 Thanks Kane, they are so easy to grow and are ripe all year round.
June 29th, 2014
@dianeburns Thanks Diane, well we have to have some colour when the leaves have all fallen for the winter.
June 29th, 2014
@gigiflower Thanks Sam for the fav and yes the frangipani is beautiful when it is flowering. We have only just lost the leaves flowers and we even manage to have a couple of leaves which manage to stay all winter. Good that we have got these beautiful winter blooms though until it flowers again.
June 29th, 2014
@ourrube Thanks Ruby. The noise they made was deafening.
June 29th, 2014
@neatz Thanks Anita, yes they are amazing we don't even have to water them and they just grow.
June 29th, 2014
Brilliant Babs. Fav.
June 29th, 2014
@julzmaioro Thanks Julia and for the fav. I think they were in a gang because of the strong winds which were on their way. Birds always seem to know when adverse weather is on its way.
June 29th, 2014
@scarybird Slip, slop slap. Are you kidding. I am so rugged up you would be hard pushed to see any bare skin.
June 29th, 2014
@ibt Thanks Ilona for the fav. As well as this lot in the tree there were just as many again on the ground. Must have been about 100 birds here, a bit difficult to count though.
June 29th, 2014
@tonygig It does cost a lot of money Tony. We do feed them and the cuurawongs, noisy miners, kookaburras, etc. you name it we feed it.
June 29th, 2014
Amazing1 I really thought they were fruit at first glance ... and second!
June 29th, 2014
@tonygig Forgot to say thanks for the fav too. @leestevo Thanks Lee-Ann. We don't usuually get quite as many as this. About 100 yesterday, I think they were on holidays for the day from Sydney.
June 29th, 2014
That is a fine crop of lorikeets, Babs. Bright and colourful (and a bit noisy, I would guess). When will they be ripe enough to pick? :)
June 29th, 2014
Fantastic capture, what a fab event for your frangipani Fav :-)
June 29th, 2014
that is something I've never seen! How did you get them all on there at the one time? Did you put honey on the tips of the branches?
June 29th, 2014
This is very special. Maybe the bread was a thank you for posing for me and bring pleasure to my 365project friends.
June 29th, 2014
Beautiful, all looking read to pick !!
June 29th, 2014
Love this Babs could be an idea for a book The Lorikeet Tree and this would be the perfect cover! Just need someone to write the book! Chilly 15 degrees, wasn't much better here yesterday when we had our rainy trip to London - flaming June indeed!
June 29th, 2014
How amazing! I need to watch my frangipani tree more closely, to see if it sprouts this many lorikeets!
June 29th, 2014
Wonderful capture Babs, , didn't know they grow on trees, its summer a barmy 17 degress today in Lancashire with no wind , shorts and polo shirt order of the day off to watch a cricket match;)
June 29th, 2014
Kat
Fabulous capture. They do blend in with the tree and make good leaf impersonations (albeit rather noisy leaves!) Oh, i can just imagine the noise. Fav for me. :)
June 29th, 2014
wow great capture Fav :)
June 29th, 2014
Great capture.
June 29th, 2014
Oh WOW fav because oh WOW - would love a lorikeet tree - what a great chance!
June 29th, 2014
@wordpixman Thanks Arthur. Very noisy fruit.
June 29th, 2014
@creampuff Very noisy. Almost ready for picking I think.

@hermann Thanks for the fav Sally. Really brought the frangipani back to life.

@angelat They just flew in. I heard them before I saw them. I counted 48 in the tree and there were about the same number on the ground too. This was just before the wind and the rain came and I suspect they sensed it was on its way. Perhaps they were on a bus trip from Sydney. No glue or honey was used in the making of this photo.

@ethelperry Thanks Ethel. They were certainly forming quite a gang. I saw them in the garden and then I put some bread out for them and it lasted all of 2 minutes.

@beryl They do look quite ripe don't they.

@paulaw thanks Paula. I saw your London photo, shame about the weather. At least it is winter here and we expect it to be cold, but it is so disheartening in the UK when summer arrives and the weather doesn't play right.

@888rachel Definitely recommend keeping an eye on it. They come and go so quickly though.

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. I know what the weather is in Lancashire today. I have just phoned my sister and she is complaining that it is quite chilly. she lives in Worsley.
Shorts and polo shirt at 17 degrees, are you quite mad. I am all rugged up here.

@darthkitty Thanks so much for the fav Kat. The noise was deafening. All together there must have been over 80 lorikeets in the garden. They had really formed quite a gang. Perhaps they were tourists

@onlyme111 Thanks so much for the fav Gaylene.

@wanabe Thanks Meredith. We don't usually get this many at one time.

@quietpurplehaze Thanks Hazel. I can post you one if you are interested.
June 29th, 2014
Pfft! Haha, this made me crack up! Can these be found at the local nursery? I think I would love to have a few in the garden! An amazing capture, perhaps they all came to be famous and get their photo taken? :)
June 29th, 2014
Changed my mind! This is the best shot. Overall favourite of all time !!
June 29th, 2014
Excellent pic..
June 29th, 2014
Wow! How amazing is that!
June 29th, 2014
Fantastic shot - love all the colors!
June 29th, 2014
@lilminimonka @chimfa @almondjoy1 @dolphin @loweygrace Thanks so much. We do get a lot of lorikeets in the garden, but never as many as this. I think they were gathering together in a gang because there was a storm brewing. Either than or they were on holiday from Sydney. I think there were about 100 altogether, both in the tree and on the ground.
I think you can get the trees at the local nursery Brianna, but they tend to be a bit unpredictable as to when they flower and the flowers come and go so quickly.
June 30th, 2014
Absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful capture! When I first looked at this photo, I didn't think that they were real! FAV
June 30th, 2014
Hahhaahha...I have to laugh first of all. 59 (f)....that is very pleasant where we are from!! Have never seen such a tree full of such beautiful colorful birds. Amazing Babs Major FAV
June 30th, 2014
goodness. thats amazing. well caught
June 30th, 2014
@april16 Thanks April and for the fav. There were so many rainbow lorikeets and the noise was deafening.
June 30th, 2014
@eyesmile 59 degrees F may be pleasant to you Gena, but you seem to forget that I am very sensitive, ha ha. You should see how many layers of clothes I am wearing. Australia makes you a bit soft when it comes to cold.
Even the lorikeets were going round in a gang complaining of the cold. ha ha. thanks for the fav.
June 30th, 2014
@jaynspain Thanks Jayn. We do get a lot of rainbow lorikeets normally but not as many as this at one time usually. There must have been about 100 here that day all together. I think it was because there was a storm brewing and they ganged together. The noise they were making was incredible.
June 30th, 2014
15 degrees is tropical for us- quit grouching!!! :-) Lovely shot and again, not one I can take in our local park!
June 30th, 2014
What a fabulous sight! How lucky are you! I'm in your side re the temperature, Babs! I'm wrapped up in layers at 12C (54F) atm!
June 30th, 2014
Fabulous. Where do you buy one of these?
June 30th, 2014
@angelar Thanks Angela. You can keep your 15 degrees tropical I will settle for 34 degrees any day. It was the icy wind straight from Antarctica which made the difference to the air temperature. Prefer the winds from the north. As I said to Gena I am very sensitive to cold. ha ha. We are lucky though because even in winter in Australia, it isn't winter every day we have some lovely warm days too and lots of sunshine. It is just a bit of a shock when we are not used to it.
June 30th, 2014
@kwiksilver Thanks Gillian. We have got such clear skies at the moment and the wind is from the south straight up the coast from Antarctica so quite chilly. At least we don't get snow.
June 30th, 2014
@kathiecb Thanks Kathie. The tree you pinch off a neighbour when they prune it, you just stick the branch in the ground and it grows like wildfire. The lorikeet flowers are a bit more difficult. You never quite know when they are going to flower and one minute they are there and then they are gone again. You have to be quick to spot them. I've never known such a noisy plant. ha ha.
June 30th, 2014
@onewing Don't forget the bread for fertilizer. LOL
July 1st, 2014
Oh wowee, wonderful capture Babs. Fav
