This is my den! by onewing

This is my den!

A pair of osprey's have made a nest on the Telstra communications tower at the Gan Gan Lookout in Nelson Bay. They have been nesting there for a few years. I hope nobody has to climb the tower to do any servicing.

This osprey has just caught a fish and is eating it. You can't see it very clearly because the tower is so high. I could have got a closer shot of the bird, but I wanted to show the size of the nest too.

We have still got blue skies but it is so cold today and is probably only about 14 degrees c at the moment.

Now that sure is a BIG nest! Is it the same nest every year or do they have to rebuild it??
July 6th, 2014
@tomtom ha ha. If you have got a tower near you with an osprey nesting in it I doubt any Telstra people would climb it either.

@gosia Thanks so much.

@gigiflower I think they just add to it each year. Perhaps do a bit of spring cleaning I suppose. Last year there was a bicycle tyre in among the twigs. Can't see that today though. Maybe it is inside the nest now. We have had a couple of really bad storms in the last few months so maybe it has had a bit of refurbishment.

We used to get kestrels nesting on the chemical plant my husband worked on. Guess it's pretty undisturbed for them. Super shot.

Amazing nest and location - well captured.

That is one huge engineering feat from our feathered friends, great find and capture :-)

Good place to nest - they may actually get some mobile reception, kinda envious. ;) Great shot. :)

Great shot of that huge nest! Wow!
July 6th, 2014
I wonder if the tower will zap their brains like we have been told will happen to us! Great shot.

Fabulous shot Babs.

wonderful shot :)

That bird must have great coverage. I bet it would even get signal for vodaphone from there.
It is a beautiful bird.

What a great spot for a house......Internet on hand, a plentiful supply of food & a view to die for! Location, location, location!
July 6th, 2014
@angelar Prime real estate. Very undisturbed I would say. The aerials on the towers give more protection too. 360 degree views and close to the ocean for fishing.

@quietpurplehaze @hermann @darthkitty @loweygrace They really have a great spot. I agree Kat, definitely get decent mobile coverage and tv coverage plus a direct like to marine rescue and ambulance etc. All the antenna's are up there.

@888rachel Don't think the tower has zapped their brains so far. They have been up there for a few years and they are still pretty good at fishing. Plus the closer you are to a tower the less radiation you get as it is directional. We get more radiation from the sun.

@karlow75 ha ha. Now you are really being silly Kane. Telstra, Optus, TV coverage, Marine Rescue, Emergency services, everything probably but Vodaphone, Nah!
July 6th, 2014
@creampuff @onlyme111 Thanks. Definitely a good spot.

@happypat I agree Pat. Prime real estate up there. Fantastic views, TV, Internet, Mobile phone coverage, emergency services coverage, handy for fishing, privacy, what more could you ask for.

Mighty big house he has!
July 6th, 2014
That is a substantial nest. Usually they build onto existing nests if they haven't been torn or blown.down.
July 7th, 2014
what an impressive nest they have built there! And aren't they an amazing bird to watch! You have captured this very well.

Fabulous nature shot Babs

@jaynspain @april16 @kathiecb @angelat @tonygig @leestevo Thank you all so much. He was very high up on the tower and had just brought the fish home to eat. His partner came home with nothing and went into the nest, probably in a huff. ha ha. All the time this bird was eating his fish he had his eye on us at the look out. I don't think he was planning on sharing.

Great image Babs, the nest looks a little rough to raise chick's;)
