We have been in Newcastle all day today. We went to take photos of the Hit the Bricks street art. What we didn't know though was that there was going to be a rally against the closure of Newcastle railway station, so today's photo is a collection of photos I took of the rally.
On Boxing Day Newcastle and Civic railway stations will close. The line into Newcastle will end at Wickham which is just outside central Newcastle. The reasons the powers that be are giving is because of the disruption to traffic by the rail crossings in the centre of Newcastle, but really it is about land grab by developers along the Newcastle foreshore. They want to build high rise apartments etc and make a truck load of money out of it.
The length of the rail line to be removed is only about 2 km but I shudder to think what this land will be worth to a developer.
I find it hard to believe that there is an alterier motive. Politicians are very well known for their honesty and integrity. They may have a real concern for the traffic situation.
But I seriously doubt it.
Fabulous turn out but it won't make a blind difference....these land grabbers don't care a jot for the ordinary man in the street!
Hope the upheaval to train passengers won't be too severe.
I am horrified by the closure, sneaky, sneaky behaviour. Its all about money grabbing. The high rises will look very attractive ...not...Thanks for sharing Babs :)
I guess it happens everywhere these days. Doesn't make it good wherever it is though does it. I wonder what people in the future will think of your collection of photos of the day?!
But I seriously doubt it.
Hope the upheaval to train passengers won't be too severe.
Thanks everyone for your comments. Of course, the rally won't make any difference to the outcome. I am sure the land grabbers have already got the plans in place for the land even before the rail lines have been removed.
