Day 3 of the Geelong bollard sculptures. The details of these bollards are in the previous photo if anyone is interested.
The bollards depict many of the events and history of the Geelong region.
Apparently the lady in the bottom centre of this collage is Carrie Moore. Carrie was one of eight children and grew up in Geelong in poverty. Her voice must have been very special as in her early twenties she was playing leading roles in operetta and in 1908 took London by storm singing the lead in The Merry Widow. She became very wealthy, but only left £503 when she died in 1956.
Great story about Carrie. She must have been a real character! There are so many more of these than when we were last there a few years ago. Time for another visit on our next venture south!
What a great honour to be depicted by being a Geelong bollard! She looks very glam! Each one has its own character & must be a real tourist attraction.
What a fantastic idea of Jan's to make bollards so interesting. I hope Carrie's childhood of poverty helped her to enjoy her wealth later in life. She did well if she only left £503! :)
@beachdog Thanks Barb, they are all wonderful. I didn't get a shot of all of them because we ran out of time, but would love to go back and capture some more one day. There are over a hundred bollards along the waterfront now I believe.
@pcoulson Thanks so much for the fav Peter. I walked miles to capture as many of the bollards as I could, but unfortunately, didn't have time to see them all.
@paulaw Thanks Paula, I think you are right. She must have had a wonderful time spending all her money.
I remember seeing a gravestone once and it said "Owen Moore has passed away, owing more than he can pay" ha ha.
