Don't Get Grit in Your Eye

Today David and I caught up with Nicole, @nicolecampbell Rob and their girls at Birubi Beach and had a lovely time with them. I will post the photos taken there tomorrow because I haven't had chance to download them to my computer yet.

I had to include a photo of David in my Steamfest photos though, so here is my last Steamfest photo.

This was taken on the steam train that featured in yesterday's photo during our trip to Branxton.

You may wonder about the purpose of the title. Well, when I was about seven years old I went for a ride on a steam train with my sister and Mum and of course, I had to stick my head out of the open window on the train didn't I! As a result I got some grit from the steam engine smoke in my eye and I ended up at the eye hospital because Mum couldn't remove it. At the hospital they had to turn my upper eyelid inside out to remove the huge piece of grit.

I think I must still be in therapy for that one, ha ha, because I can still think about it now donkeys years later.
I had an experience with a fish bone around the same age and did not eat fish until I was an adult - I am still very fussy about the filleting process :)

Sam
Oh I can't stand anything in my eyes!!! You must have been a brave young girl :)
April 22nd, 2017
wonderful candid shot. I knew this shot was taken on the steam train as soon as I saw it. I bet David doesn't kneel down when in church - what we do because of the camera!

Great photo of the photographer.
Grit in the eye sounds very painful. No wonder you have remembered it.
April 22nd, 2017
Great acpture, I always like photos of photographers in action :)
April 22nd, 2017
Thank you for spending the morning with us. It was lovely to meet you both and we fad a great time. The girls swam for about 40 minutes.
April 22nd, 2017
Great shot and story :)
April 22nd, 2017
Love how he's capturing the ride. I guess you don't ever stick your head out the window which is a good thing.
April 22nd, 2017
That's a great capture of David and a very apt title after reading your story (which made me wince by the way).
April 22nd, 2017
Nice shot
April 22nd, 2017
Cool shot and I'm glad you all had a good time together.
April 22nd, 2017
Nice capture and tale told!!
April 22nd, 2017
Thought this had to be yours and that it was David in the picture. A master at work is what popped into my head when I saw it.
April 22nd, 2017
Ouch, traumatic!!
David looks full of concentration there. Nice shot.
April 22nd, 2017
Your story made me think of the film "Brief Encounter," I'm sure you must have seen it? David looks busy there.. is that a monopod? or some other tripod thing?
April 22nd, 2017
Love your expression' donkeys years later' a real British phrase! I haven't heard that one for quite a while! Lovely wood inside that train. David is concentrating on his videoing!
April 22nd, 2017
Great capture of what w/he have to do to get a master pic.
April 22nd, 2017
What a lovely photo - David is concentrating well. My father used to take us on preserved railways and always told us not to put our head out of the window because of grit. Brings back happy memories.
April 22nd, 2017
@annied Memories like that do stick with you don't they.
April 22nd, 2017
@yaorenliu It was rather painful. I have never stuck my head out of a train window since.
April 22nd, 2017
@quietpurplehaze Thanks Hazel. He was videoing the outside of the train as it went round the bend.
April 22nd, 2017
@365projectorgjenfurj It was a great day Jen. Last year our train ride was to Port Waratah and that was a great journey too.
April 22nd, 2017
@gigiflower Not so sure about brave Sam, but I suppose I come from Yorkshire and they make us tough there. ha ha.
April 22nd, 2017
@sangwann Kneeling down is okay, it is getting up again that is the problem.
April 22nd, 2017
@nicolecampbell Thanks to you too Nicole, it was a great day. Glad the weather was nice.
April 22nd, 2017
@lesip You are right Leslie, never stuck my head out of a train window since.
April 22nd, 2017
@susiemc It made me wince too Sue, still does, ha ha.
April 22nd, 2017
@salza He took lots of videos of the day. He prefers videos these days to photos.
April 22nd, 2017
@stephanies Yes I remember Brief Encounter, one of my favourite old movies. Celia Johnson always reminded me of my Mum when she was young.
April 22nd, 2017
@happypat Donkeys years is a phrase I often use. Must be an old British phrase cos I am an old British lady.
April 22nd, 2017
@megpicatilly I wish your Dad had been on the train when I stuck my head out of the window. ha ha.
April 22nd, 2017
I took a shot the other year out of a moving steam engine and you can see the large lumps of soot in the air it certainly wouldn't be pleasant to get one in your eye..
April 23rd, 2017
So serious!!!
April 23rd, 2017
Pam
Great shot!
April 23rd, 2017
This is great.
April 23rd, 2017
Wot, no cinders? Love the shot.
April 23rd, 2017
A lovely candid
April 23rd, 2017
What a great candid capture Babs, love the way you have used the light from the open window adding lots of interesting detail to the shot:)
April 23rd, 2017
Sounds awful, hope your psyche will recover
April 23rd, 2017
There's always something to photograph on a steam train, nice to see a professional at work!
April 23rd, 2017
A great idea to use the monopod instead of leaning out. No grit in his eye :)
April 24th, 2017
David was videoing the train as it went around a bend. good job he had the monopod to stabilize the camera because I think the carriages on the train had square wheels and it was very bumpy.
April 24th, 2017
That grit business sounds most painful. I'm not surprised that it got stuck in your mind too.
April 24th, 2017
David is one serious photographer there! Yikes, getting that grit out was an ordeal! Good shot!
