Newcastle Ocean Baths by onewing

Newcastle Ocean Baths

This photo of the Newcastle ocean baths was taken from the top of the steps leading down to the Bogey Hole that featured in yesterday's shot. The ocean baths are about 1 km from the Bogey Hole, so I used lots of zoom for this photo.

The ocean baths were constructed, and in use before WW1, though not formally opened until the 1920s. The construction of the Art Deco pavilion you can see in this shot began in 1922.
Lovely capture, that looks so inviting 😉

Looks like you have a lot of nice safe places to swim! No sharks being the main advantage!

remember swimming in ocean baths as a child along Sydney's northern beaches. That pavilion looks wonderful. Has it been maintained well
January 3rd, 2018
I like the idea of being able to swim safely. This looks very safe.
January 3rd, 2018
@cruiser Yes it has been maintained. The baths close every now and then for maintenance.

A great place to swim :)

It looks so much bigger from this perspective Babs, lovely capture:)

@pcoulson This is the ocean baths Peter, not the Bogey Hole and the baths are quite big. There are two pools, one behind the pavilion and the closest one to us in this picture is the kiddy pool.

@maggiemae Newcastle is about 60 km from where I live so not a local place for a dip.
Here is a clip from one of our local beaches taken at Easter last year. Fingal Bay is about 10 km from our house. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XpyV0jvYFY
The sharks are feeding on a shoal of mullet.

Such an unusual place to have public baths. Very interesting.
January 3rd, 2018
A fascinating scene. You have a whole variety of bathing options - all of which seem popular.
January 3rd, 2018
The pavilion looks interesting, is it in use? Pretty blue colours in the sky and sea. Dull and grey here Babs.
January 3rd, 2018
What a view!

Great capture, composition

What a stunning spot to swim. Sadly, too far from base for a quick dip. Am green with envy.
January 3rd, 2018
Love all the blues - envious of your summer months as it's wind and rain in the UK at the moment.
January 3rd, 2018
@leananiemand Not freezing at all Leana, it is the middle of summer here in Australia and the sea temperature is around 26 degrees C. It will probably be warmer in the ocean pools.
January 3rd, 2018
@happypat No cold Pat. It is summer here and as I said to Leana the water temperature is around 26 degrees C at the moment. Cooler than it was on land but refreshing because this particular day it was around 32 degrees C as we walked along the waterfront.

@stephanies The pavilion is mainly a façade these days. Just toilet blocks, changing rooms and shower blocks now.
January 3rd, 2018
@s4sayer A bit too far for us too to have a quick dip. Newcastle is about 60 km from our house at Nelson Bay. We were just visiting friends this day.
