I took this photo a couple of weeks ago while we were in Newcastle on a rather grey winter's day and forgot to post it.
Wickham Public School was built in 1904. It was severely damaged in the 1989 Newcastle earthquake.
After the heritage listed school was restored the Department of Education said that there was no possibility of it being used as a school again. In 2012 Newcastle City council sold the school to the Samaritans for $1. The school is to be used to accommodate homeless and at risk youths studying at the University of Newcastle or TAFE.
Wonderful idea of the Council to give it over for the use of the homeless. At this very moment I am reading a book of John Gresham about a successful lawyer who left his job to act as lawyer for the poor - I'm loving it.
