I See No Whales! by onewing

I See No Whales!

On Thursday it was a beautiful winters day and the temperature was somewhere around 24 degrees C, so we drove up to Boat Harbour to do a spot of whale watching.

These photos aren't the best in the world but I was there more to watch the whales rather than take photos of them.

As we stood on the cliffs I had to smile at the lady in the red coat, she seemed to appear in quite a few of the photos I took and every time she was looking in the opposite direction to where the whales actually were. I did wonder if she actually spotted any.

As you can see the whales were swimming quite close to the rocks. Unfortunately, none of them either performed a breach or a tail slap but it was still magnificent to watch them passing by so close.

I have had a lazy day at home today because it has gone so chilly and windy and the temperature has only reached about 16 degrees. The sun is shining even though it is cold.

PS Thanks so much for putting Watching the Waves on the TT.
A lovely collage Baps , but it made me smile when I read your intro. about the lady in red always looking in the wrong direction to where the whale was !! -- perhaps she was there for the sounds of the sea ! ha ha ! :)

Super collage telling the story - and a bonus seeing the whales so close to shore.

Great collage! So exciting to be able to watch the whales so close to the shore! The same happened to me last year in Newfoundland when I could see the water spouts and the flippers but like you never saw them breach. Even so it was a breathtaking experience! I laughed at the lady in red looking the other way! Fav!

What strikes me is the incredible blue of the sea!

How amazing to watch whales for real! Smiling at that lady. She probably went home saying there weren't any out today!

Nice collage.Must be great to see we don't get many in Rutland Water!

Beautiful set of pictures and I love your narrative about the lady in red. Have never seen a live whale in my lifetime. Somebody said that 10 miles out at sea he/she saw a whale while fishing. But I don't know of any whales coming into the Mediterranean Sea as yet.

Your photos are much better than mine when we spotted them. Of course I had only packed one lens and it wasn't the correct one! Then again I hadn't been thinking I was going to see any whales that weekend.

She was almost as entertaining as the whales. Perhaps she would have seen more if she hadn't been looking through binoculars.
The whales always come close to the rocks on their way north but tend to be more out to sea on their return journey between September and November. We were only at Boat Harbour for about an hour but saw so many whales pass by.

@casablanca I think you are right, I doubt she saw many at all. There were quite a few whales further out to sea and she probably spotted those through her binoculars, but sad that she missed the close up ones.

@annied We are getting to the end of the season for the journey north now and then they will start their return journey from September onwards. We saw about 30 whales this day.

@happypat Luckily we do get lots of warm days during winter. The last couple of days have been chilly and windy though. today looks like a sunny day so far.

@nicolecampbell David had his 500 mm lens and got some good close up shots. He took this lens on a whale watch boat a couple of years ago and hadn't bargained on the whales coming so close to the boat.

@gilbertwood I reckon she missed all the whales close to the shore. She would have spotted the ones further out though through her binoculars. It was so funny to watch her.

July 9th, 2018
Laughing at this wonderful storytelling series!
July 9th, 2018
Hilarious Babs, maybe she's a spy?
July 9th, 2018
@lynnz @lesip @taffy The lady in red was almost as entertaining as the whales.
July 9th, 2018
@golftragic No definitely not a spy, they don't wear red. I know a few military spies and they don't stand out in a crowd.
