The Bad News and the Good News

This section of Foreshore Drive in Salamander Bay is about 2 km long and is completely blocked off as you can see since the road collapsed. during our recent heavy rains.

The road is closed to traffic at either end of this section of road and you have to walk about 1 km to get to the hole in the road whichever side you approach it from.

The top photo is from our closest side of the foreshore and the bottom shot is from the far side of the road.

To get to the far side of Foreshore Drive we have to drive 7 km around Salamander Bay, park the car by the blocked off section of road and then walk 1 km to the hole in the road.

Unfortunately, my favourite tree is on the far side of the collapsed road but it was lovely to see it is still standing when I walked on that side of the beach a few days ago.

I think it will be quite some time before I am able to walk to the tree from our side of Salamander Bay.

It is possible to get there along the beach from our side of the bay but it depends on the tides and also there are the mangrove swamps along that stretch of water too, so it gets a bit soggy along the way. It is easier to get to from the far side of Foreshore Drive but as I said above we have a 7 km drive to get there now.

The bad news is that the road has been washed away and the good news is that my favourite tree is still standing
Oh my goodness. You certainly did a great job capturing all of this

That's the section of road that was on the BBC news! Fame at last. I hope they can get on and mend it speedily, that's an awfully long meander around for you. Love the triptych

Goodness me, what a mess!
April 7th, 2021
What a story! I'm sure you will find a way to get to your tree. Shame about the road. Some have it while some have not - you are getting all the rain while we have had almost no rain at all this last month.

My Gosh Babs....Great triptych & so pleased your favourite tree is safe...Lots of damage after the deluge of rain.

Great images! What a damages.
April 7th, 2021
oh my goodness.

@casablanca I can't believe that such an insignificant road would make it to the BBC news. There are only about 29 waterfront houses on this 2 km stretch of road and the rest of the road is made up of mangrove wetlands. It was only a matter of time before this section would be washed away as there is a culvert under the road.
April 7th, 2021
Oh, wow
April 7th, 2021
Oh my there's a lot of damage. when I see the house surrounded by water I think it could've been worse. has this happen before.
April 7th, 2021
Nice documentary photos.
April 7th, 2021
@onewing I guess they just had a cameraman nearby!
April 7th, 2021
Hopefully your tree will survive the rebuild of the road and culvert.
April 7th, 2021
Terrible - but looks like you have lots of interesting places to photograph

Wonderful captures and good news re your favourite tree.
April 7th, 2021
It certainly made a mess of the road.
April 7th, 2021
You could always make a run at it and jump over. FAV
April 7th, 2021
A nice triptych, showing the kind of damage too much rain can do.

Oh my goodness. What a mess. So glad your tree is still standing. Hope it survives with it's feet in all that water.
April 7th, 2021

That tree looks like it has survived a lot.
April 7th, 2021
That is quite dramatic. The triptych makes a great story - I wonder what caused such a collapse. Hopefully all will come good in the end.

We didn't do as bad as some places in New South Wales. Luckily we don't live near rivers or creeks. This was just the damage between the ocean front and wetlands.

@ladymagpie I would have pole vaulted over the gap, but I didn't have my pole with me.

@helenhall I think it might have been over 600 mm constant rain over a 7 day period that may have done the damage

I remember that wonderful tree...but boy such destruction
