Coal Ship and Tugs by onewing

Coal Ship and Tugs

This month’s topic is Newcastle and all the photos this month are ones which I have taken since starting 365, but they have not so far had an airing. Sometimes, because we take so many photos, many of our shots slip through the cracks and the aim of my topics album is to show photos which have so far done just that. Hope you enjoy my tour through Newcastle.

Today’s Newcastle photo is of a bulk carrier being steered out of Newcastle Harbour by one of the shore based marine pilots and three tugs. Marine Pilots are shore based specialists within the industry who guide large ships into and out of ports. Ship Captains inform port authorities when they will need assistance in berthing and Port Authorities arrange for marine pilots to assist. When ships are coming into or out of port the pilot is taken out to the ship via boat or helicopter and takes control of the vessel until it arrives safely in or out of port.

This ship is the Hanjin Samarinda, built in 2011 in China and owned by a South Korean company.
This ship it is laden with coal destined for Korea or China probably.

It sure is a looooonnnngggg carrier! Love how you have kept the fisherman in the shot - shows how BIG the carrier really is (or how small us humans are)

Great shot! It shows how close to land they get, and how big they really are.

@dolphin Taking coal to Newcastle is about Newcastle upon Tyne I think, but not sure. Our Newcastle was named after the one in the UK because of the coal and steel works I believe. A lot of our towns and cities are named after places in the UK. I think that is how New South Wales got its name because early settlers thought it looked like South Wales in the UK.

@darthkitty I think the fishermen have seen a few ships coming and going. I believe there are about 4000 ship movements a year in the Port of Newcastle.

@gigiflower @888rachel @angelat @dianeburns @ibt @scarybird @pcoulson @annied @peadar @darthkitty @happypat @angelar @kathiecb Thank you all so much. It really is one of the larger ships I have seen in Newcastle. I wouldn't fancy parking this at the coal loaders.

@golftragic Thanks Marnie, it was a bit of a squeeze getting it all in the shot with the tugs as well.

@terryliv Don't think it got stuck on the beach Terry. That one has been done. Once is an accident, twice is stupidity. ha ha.

Love these kinds of shots. Get lots of these on the Columbia River...which goes to the Ocean. The fisherman are a great addition and help put everything into perspective.
