Shoes on a wire by orangecrush

Shoes on a wire

Is this something that only happens here in the USA? I see this all over! People tie there shoes together and throw them up over telephone and power lines untill they get hooked on the wire! Most of the time they are good shoes too! :o) I have to admit, I love it! Seeing a street in the city with shoes on the lines is as good as graffiti! :)
Flippin fantastic fav

@glendq Ha! Really! That would explain the neighborhoods I would see this in! Funny!
September 12th, 2013
It happens here in Australia also and I have heard the same thing as @glendq.

Love the lighting! I have seen pictures posted from all around the world. Only time I have seen it was when I visited San Francisco earlier this year. There are many different explanations ranging from drugs to memorials.

Ha ha, happens in the UK too :) Drove under a pair yesterday!
The other thing we get is randomly lost single shoes, abandoned on roads/ footpaths....strange
September 12th, 2013
yes...I see it also. Have heard stories about it marking a place to buy drugs...but don't know if that it sture. Great POV and perspective!!

Coming from my husband who is a power lineman, this is their worst nightmare. When people do this around here the shoes gave to be removed from the line. Not long ago a man was called out to remove a pair from the power line. Long story short, he was electrocuted and his body burnt from the inside out :( Very sad. When my husband sees this sort of thing he cusses and swears. Lol. I do like your shot tho! Great angle!

I would think it positively dangerous! Over here they tie things to fences- bras, shoes, bikes! People are like sheep! I like where you have chosen to put the major light .
September 12th, 2013
Excellent photo... I've seen this everywhere I've been, so there is something to it... but I have no confirmation. In Mexico people told me they do it when someone passes away? This does not look to follow that idea.
September 12th, 2013
Great shot!!

September 12th, 2013
Great shot! Happens here in Melbourne...rumour is that it means drugs are available in that area...haven't seen any for a while though.
September 12th, 2013
It happens in Australia, I think it has something to do with where to buy your drugs!
September 12th, 2013
Yes, I think it is some kind of universal sign that says we are open for business
September 12th, 2013
No shoes on wires here - I guess we're clean then LOL!
September 12th, 2013
Great shot! Fav! There is another 365er who found bicycles in a tree! I wonder what that means?

Great shot! nope happens here too.... in the great north! another favorite here is the shoe tree! samething but you toss the shoes into the tree & they get caught on branches.... sometimes they also nail the shoes to the tree, if I see one will post a picture for you.
September 12th, 2013

September 12th, 2013
Fun shot of a great observation! Yes, it happens a lot in the USA :)
September 12th, 2013
I've heard the one about it being a sign of drugs for sale too.
Cool pov and the processingmakes it look like the line stretches for ages.
September 12th, 2013
My story is quite different... but probably started because of the drug stories. :)
I heard (as a joke) that the random shoes on power lines and on the road were a sign that someone was abducted by aliens! We always say, "Well, someone was picked up last night!" when we see them. We get a kick out of it.
I love this photo though!
September 13th, 2013
Thats really cool Jerry
September 13th, 2013

Mac
This is the most I've seen in one place. Awesome processing.
September 15th, 2013
fantastic pov and processing!
September 16th, 2013
It happens here in Western Canada too! I was told it is a territorial marking for drug dealers....like they mark off their turf ...so other dealers know to go elsewhere....crazy that it is all over the world...and affliated with drugs. I like the alien story too though! that one is at least funny!

September 17th, 2013
That is interesting I certainly do not know whey they do it
September 17th, 2013
Cool shot. Gangs marking their turf I've been told by several gang and drug units of the FBI and the police, as Diana said above. @ladydi53
September 17th, 2013
here's my understanding of it, and a friend of mine that is a police officer told me this.... if you see just one pair, and it is at an intersection or in front of (or behind) a house, it is generally a signal where you can buy drugs. When it is multiple pairs and they are identical, its a marking of territory thing. If you see a few pairs near an area where young people hang out (like a park, school, etc) it is to mark someone moving away... the person moving tosses a pair of his or her shoes up on a line to be remembered. So it would seem that all the things people say about it are true... but the nature of where and how many, etc determines which answer is correct. (and there are probably copy cats that do it not knowing that a particular pair means something)
September 17th, 2013
Woah! Have never seen it here in SA but very interesting theories mentioned above & cool shot :)
September 17th, 2013
@jsw0109 it always makes me think of the movie wag the dog... but yeah, i remember the discussion on here some months ago and now on the few occasions when i see shoes on the hydro wires here in canada i start to wonder...

i do like this pov, light and processing for the shot a lot! makes it more like art then documentation of something observed...
September 18th, 2013
@jsw0109 Wow! I had no idea there was even a meaning to it! I just thought it was always just kids being kids! You learn something new every day! Sad thing is this is in my neighborhood! :-0
September 18th, 2013
@orangecrush I think in your case, its kids that have moved away
September 18th, 2013
@jsw0109 Thanks! That makes me feel better! :o) Its a house full of young dudes that have been there for a couple of years tho!
September 18th, 2013
Very cool shot! Great processing and pov
September 18th, 2013
What a fantastic POV -- it's a beautiful shot and interesting to learn about all the reasons for hanging shoes. Fav!
September 19th, 2013
Look what you started Jerry..... now we are all getting a street education here. And yes, Jeff is absolutely correct in his explanation of the single and multiple shoes hanging. And yes, I love the shot!!!
September 23rd, 2013
Cool shot
September 23rd, 2013
Another one I missed. I lived in Little Five Points (L5P) in Atlanta--this was tradition, and it's the best.
September 29th, 2013
Out in Oregon we have whole trees full of them!
September 29th, 2013
Happens in canada too, def where you can find a dealer (I've been told). I've taken pictures of it but nothing as good as this one!
