2016 11 06 Fried Green Tomatoes (not quite!}

One of the wonderful dishes Louise @weezilou cooked for me in Lunenburg was Fried Green Tomatoes. Absolutely delicious!! Louise gave me her recipe and I decided to get the ingredients and have a go myself. First problem - no green tomatoes so I substituted large red ones which felt quite firm. Second problem - no cornmeal. The shop assistants looked at me as if I was mad "Ooh never heard of that". I must check online to see if it is available in the UK. Everything else I managed to buy including Buttermilk which was quite illusive!!

I made do without the cornmeal and just coated in breadcrumbs. Not sure if that made a lot of difference. I have to say they were delicious!! The recipe said to shake some Worcester Sauce on them and I did like that added flavour. So there we have it Louise's Fried Green Tomatoes Ah La Pam!! LOL!!

Many thanks for your lovely comments on yesterday's fuchsias. Finlay got through firework night - I think he must have a sore throat the amount of barking he did!! Sadly I expect we will get more fireworks tonight and for the next week or so.
Louise @weezilou - My effort at recreating your wonderful recipe. Not quite right but it was delicious!!

ROFL I am sure if we here in the states tried to replicated a British recipe we would have the same problem. The sure look good.

@newbank Thanks Ruth. I did manage to find the buttermilk eventually but good to know I could substitute.

Clever you to figure this out! I've never made these myself but love them.

They look good just the way they are. That reminds me, I haven't had breakfast yet! It won't be fried tomatoes though, sadly.

Of course those are very regional, so even though I have all those ingredients available much of the year, I've only heard of them in the movie. Which I do love! My grandmother used to substitute green tomatoes for apples in apple pie before the apples were ripe. You couldn't tell the difference.

Pam they look good enough to eat!!! LOL

Oh, Pam, they look so good that I think I must give them a go with the now-available red tomatoes!!! Of course bread crumbs are a perfect substitute; it's only that the cornmeal makes then "very southern" US style! Joan's @joansmor right about regional ingredients which is what keeps us from trying so many things we like...and why recipies morph, as in this instance! Ken's spoken of his grandmother using green tomatoes in a pie (where she lived in rural central US) as Dixie @pandorasecho spoke of! Pam, you and I were in agreement that much of the joy of travel is eating all the regional foods! I'm sure Taffy @taffy would also agree, and what taste treats she must have just had in China!!!

Great culinary shot!

They look delicious 😋. Daisy is hiding under the sofa again tonight. She's not got much of an appetite, and the fireworks aren't helping the situation.

@Weezilou oh! I went to college in China, and the food had some wonderful things I really miss, but while I was there I also craved Chinese food American style because I couldn't find anything like the Kung pO prawns my hometown here in Oregon served

Sounds yummy. We love friend green tomatoes, but we use an egg and flour batter on ours instead of the cornmeal.
