I picked up two new pairs of varifocal glasses today plus some varifocal sunglasses for driving. My goodness I look rough! Had a bad night with the dogs and can’t get rid of a headache!
George and Finlay are fighting over who is alpha dog and it gets worse at night. I mistakenly allowed George onto my bed and he has taken up ownership of it and won’t allow Finlay into the room without growling and starting a fight! At my wits end what to do. I put the gate at the bottom of the stairs last night and left them both downstairs. They both started barking until I eventually gave in and let them both upstairs. I know it’s my fault but now I don’t know what to do to stop the fighting.
I watched a dog whisperer show on this. Do you have kennels for them? I think you put them in separate rooms in their kennels at night. I guess first you buy earplugs for yourself! It is important that you be the alpha dog in the house. I love your glasses!
Nice glasses. It is really hard not to give in to the dogs when they are so loud and persistent. @louannwarren has a good idea … you need earplugs and determination. Smile.
Oh dear Harry & I are no good at training dogs but do know you have to be top dog! Be firm & lots of good advice here, says me who is rubbish at the trading lark! Love your glasses & reassured as I have just chosen new glasses & they are rather more over the top than I normally have so wondering if I've picked right but if you can do it so can I! Spots are spot on!
Fortunately with the sausages there are no problems. Miss Elke made it abundantly clear that she was the alpha dog and Hermy is very placid with her :)
Oh Pam, what a heck of a time you're having with those two. I'm sorry I can't help with some useful advice. We've always had bitches and don't seem to have had that problem. The one thing I know is that you need to assert your dominance as pack leader. Might be worth having a chat with your vet. Apart from behavioural advice I know that there's a spray product here (Adaptyl) that's pheremone-based and does wonders with anxious/fearful dogs.
I too love your glasses. About the dogs .... I do think Lou Ann is right. Dogs need their own spot and a portable kennel in different rooms would be perfect. If you give them a small treat as they get in at night they will grow to love their spot. Like babies the first few nights might be a little noisy but if you don't give in they will quickly get used to the new plan. We have had 4 retrievers that have been trained and tough love is a necessity if they are going to recognize you as the boss. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.
Consistency, consistency, consistency...and sounds like a lot of useful advice above. Oh gosh...this will be hard as they'll bark. Just remember, giving in sets up intermittent reinforcement which is the hardest of all rewards to extinguish once the behavior takes hold. Be strong!
Nice glasses.
I know how you feel I had the same problems with my two doggy boys for six months. I glad to say that now all is well but I still must not show any preference otherwise it could start again. Maybe for the time being you could stop both of them coming into your bedroom.
@kjarn these are Kath Kidson glasses. I have 4 different pairs now. I think if you have to wear glasses make them stylish! They are also the most comfortable glasses I have ever had. My 2 older pairs I am having converted to one pair reading and other pair for the computer.
Thanks for that. I get my glasses from Specsavers (not sure if you have them or not) and thought I had looked at every single pair in the shop when I got my new glasses the other week but when I just looked up Cath Kisdon there they were. Next time.
Great to read what others have said especially the wise comment from @365karly1 . I do know that allowing dogs on your bed, is a 'no no'. Don't give in - it will become worse.
@maggiemae I have stopped George getting on the bed. I am keeping them separate at night - so far so good! If George hears Finlay he starts to growl. I just have to keep them apart!
Fun glasses, Pam! I agree with the others! I have a kennel for Sophie to sleep in at night, ever since using it for potty training. She gets a special treat and sometimes cannot wait to go to bed. Sometimes if it gets real cold or after Dennis gets up in the morning, she will crawl under the covers with me. Katniss does sleep at my feet every night. The Dog Whisperer has good advice too with using discipline, exercise and then affection. I have had all female Schnauzers too, except for my German Shepherd was a male. Good luck! You need to be firm and the leader or you will continue to have trouble with those two cuties!!!
Cool shades and I don't think you look rough at all! I confess, I tried on a pair off-the-shelf at Sainsburys and couldn't believe how it magnified and clarified the tired lines so I sympathise :)
