5th May 2015 - First shot Canon 5D3

Why did I think getting a new camera would be easy? I have been reading the manual (leaving the section on focus until the morning!!) went through the basic set up. I always shoot Raw so set it for that. Took my first shots of Finlay of course as he was sitting in front of me wondering why I wasn't taking him out for a walk!! I was surprised by the loud clunk of the shutter - louder than the mark 2. Anyway I took a few shots and then tried to upload to my PC to see what they looked like. First my card reader would not read the card. I uploaded the software and tried to upload straight from the camera. The version of LR I have on my PC - LR3 could not recognize the RAW format from my new camera. I had forgotten to upgrade to LR5 which I then tried to do. It keeps stopping half way through the installation and will not complete the upgrade giving me no reason!! By now I am ready to throw the new camera and the PC out of the window!! I then changed the setting in the camera to Jpeg and I was able to upload some more shots to LR.
They were not very good and this was the best - I need to read about focus!!
All in all a very frustrating evening. I hope it all becomes clear in the morning!! You may hear me screaming!!

This shot is very soft - definitely not as sharp as i would like.

Uploaded for my extras album
Looks like a great first attempt to me! Yes, that shutter is surprisingly loud, but you do get used to it. There is the Silent mode which does make things a lot better, but I don't tend to use it.

I got my 5D3 about a month or so ago, and they are an awesome camera! I have yet to play properly with autofocus - I just set it to use the 9 points around centre for now until I have time to learn it properly.
Software updates are a pain, aren't they! At least once they are done you will be good to go.

One suggestion I would make - how about setting it to shoot JPG to one card and RAW to the other for now - at least that way, you have the RAW files for once you do get your PC sorted out.

Persevere, it is worth it! ;o)

@kiwisnapper Thanks for that Ashley. I always find anything to do with the computer frustrating as I don't know what I am doing most of the time!! I just assumes as I have the 5D2 it would all be the same!! Silly me!! I will definitely persevere with the camera - I can't wait to try it out on some birds!!

I got a 5D Mk111 last year - the first thing I had to get used to was the weight! Its a heavy sucker! Every time I read my manual I find something new - its a great camera and you will fall in love with it. Lovely shot of Fin. Have fun on your learning journey.

@debilz I am sure I will be fine with the new camera Debbie it's the computer that's driving me mad!

Good luck with the camera. Though I believe I am good with a computer, LR updates are never successfully installed for me. I have to call my IT person and now I ignore updates!

Wonderful processing and portrait of this cutie.

Yes, the focus is a little off, but nothing you can't fix. I remember going through a similar frustrating time when I got my new camera and the software was not up to date. I hope it loads for you ok, and congrats on your new baby!

Lovely shot but please don't throw out your computer or camera. You could go and get Adobe's free DNG converter which will convert your Raw files to Adobe's DNG format which should be editable in LR (I'm not sure which version though). Failing that, there are other Raw converters available including Canon's own EOS utility which should have come on a disk with the camera. I use DxO Optics Pro for Raw processing because I think it has better noise handling capabilities that Adobe Camera Raw. That allows me to export pictures in a number of formats.

A gorgeous capture of my favorite dog!

@creampuff Thanks for that Eve but I think I have discovered the problem. My PC runs on Windows Vista and LR5 requires Windows 7 or later. I have been checking out if I can upgrade and I think I can but there are so many warnings etc and my knowledge of computers so slight that I am scared to have a go. Perhaps i should have upgrade my computer months ago when I was thinking about it. Typical isn't it as they release new software it is not supported by the old software you are running!! I have LR5 on my laptop so I will check that out later to see if I can upload RAW files to it. It all sounds like its going to cost me lots more money!!

Why aren't you doing Photo shop the cloud. It costs $10 a month and includes Lightroom. I have LR 6 and I get notified of the updates and several other app come with it.

@joansmor I have the latest version of LR5 (disc) which I have uploaded on to my laptop. I had a space issue with my PC and did not upgrade from LR3 to LR5. It now seems that the version of Windows I have (Vista) does not support LR5. Joan I am thinking I may have to get the new computer and at that time i may go with the cloud rental.

@pamknowler Goodness knows these things become antiques quicker then we are willing to face.

What? You're reading the manual? What's the matter with you girl?
And where to next after the Mark III hey?
May 7th, 2015
Excellent! Congratulations on the new camera.

@terryliv Terry I have now bought a book which explains the manual! I am determined to work out the complicated focus on this camera as it's the main reason for upgrading from the 5d2! No good waiting until I go out BIF hunting and realise I don't know which button to press! This is the first manual I have tried to read and I need a translation! Lol!

So glad you got the camera! I'm so upset my zoom has not worked with my new camera and I am constantly reading my manual for EVERYTHING! I feel like a beginner all over. I saw your next shots though--you mastered focus!!! That's my hardest feature. And trying to figure out how to save the custom settings (c1c2c3). I feel so dumb. :(
