This is the colour version of yesterday's Pump House image which two people pointed out looked crooked. I have gone back to the original image and checked out what I did. I always check on water level and I made sure the surface of the lake was horizontal. Unfortunately the Pump House looks as if it was leaning. I think the distortion is because the iPhone is a wide angle lens? Anyway I have now straightened the building and have to ignore the fact the lake now goes uphill from left to right.
Thanks for commenting and I hope you like the adjusted image. I think it looks better in colour!!
Some photos are so difficult, aren't they? Because the right hand wall of the pump house is now straight and the horizon looks level, the lake doesn't look sloped to me, it just looks like it has swirled around into another bay. I like this version! I liked the mono but the colour is just gorgeous in the sunlight. So rich.
You're right, some lenses do distort and wide angle can be a culprit for that, but I think this is better here. The pump house is the focal point in the picture and everything leads to it.
@pamknowler This can happen if you are tilting the camera up or down - converging verticals. You only tend to get distortions on extra wide angle lenses when you get close to a subject - a mistake people make when doing portrait photography and using a wide angle lens. I think the iPhone 6 is around 29mm, so not super wide. Unfortunately, the Pump House is till slightly out of kilter on the right edge and the only way to really correct this problem is within a photo software program or an app. If you try and correct it via a slight rotation, then something else will not be level.
Its a nice photo and with a few tweaks on composition, could be strong. Taking a step back would allow the edge of the bottom wall to come out on a corner diagonal and would also give some breathing space where those steps are on the left and are at the moment . Doing this would give a good clean zig zag diagonal line going from the bottom right corner and then up to the Pump House. Unfortunately, the strong sun light is not doing you any favour because of the very dark shadow area by the wall and then the very bright area in the bottom of the left corner which is a bit of a distraction, so the only way of overcoming this is by trying to lift that dark shadow area. If you can get back to the location easily, have a try with the tweaked composition. Hope this helps.
@followthatdreamphotography Thanks for all that helpful information Michael, very interesting, and hopefully now stored away in my brain-box for future reference. DxO ViewPoint 3 is my go-to for difficult shots like this one of Pam's. @pamknowler
@followthatdreamphotography many thanks for your very helpful comments and advice Michael. I am often in this location walking the dogs so I expect I will be having another go. Probably take my Canon 5d though! Lol!
