I took a long walk along the canal yesterday.
This is the Tame Valley canal and this section is Perry Barr locks. This shows 5 of the 13 locks along this stretch.
Very nice scene. Is there usually a paved walk way along all the canals? How far would a canal go? This is not something I am familiar with at all here in the southeastern USA.
@thewatersphotos The canal network runs all around the UK and in the Birmingham area where I live there are 35 miles of canals criss-crossing the city and outlying areas. It is said that Birmingham has more canals than Venice.
They were built in the Industrial Revolution in the mid 1700's to the mid 1800's and were used to transport coal, iron and other goods to feed the industries in the city.
They usually run roughly parallel to main roads and motorways and you can get on and off them at various points by gateways on the streets.
This stretch I did here was about 3 miles long and the total for the Tame Valley canal is 8.5 miles where it will then join with the Walsall canal.
They are used now for leisure by walkers, cyclists and narrow boat owners and the paths vary between paved and basic grass depending on the space available.
I hope this gives you a better idea of the history and usage.
Great capture of this lovely channal view. Fav.
(I`m well know of the history of the Brittish channels . In the old day`s I use to get gargo from narrow boats in the Regent Channel dock. Love them, listen to the stories of the schppers (Leggers) and was very interrest after. The developping of the railroads has much similars )
