I have a postage stamp sized front garden with this dwarf Acer in the centre. Well I say dwarf as it's supposed to grow to 5 foot but it had reached 8 foot and showed no sign of stopping.
I took the loppers to it over the winter and took a good 3 foot off it then worried that I'd killed it.
I'm glad to say it is flourishing and covered in these little pink flowers which I've never seen before so I think it did it some good. The pesky aphids seem to be loving it too, I just need some hungry ladybirds to move in now.
