in the back

A common sight in South Africa is people riding in the back of a bakkie (truck). The men sit in front of the bakkie and the women at the back.

South African culture is generally male-dominated, with women accorded a lower status than men are.

They definitely don't look best pleased. Good shot - it's seems to be very revealing of the society.

The lady looks like she's glaring at you ;-) Well caught, Paula. Love your local candid shots. When I was a kid I used to love riding in the back of my uncle's pickup truck. That was a very big deal to me. LOL...at one time I had those initials (on the license plate).

Oh, I don't think I would last long in this culture! This photo sure makes a statement...I think I would have a look like that on my face if I was riding in the back of that old Datsun. LOL Nice shot!

Nice shot--but I cringe every time I see people in the back of a truck. We had an awful accident here some years ago where several teens were thrown from the bed and killed... I really enjoy your street shots--they give a real feel for what life is like in South Africa.

Love the "day in the life" shots. Have you given any thoughts to creating a book?

That Datsun has to be a very old vehicle, as it has been unite a few years since they changed their name to Nissan,.......
