Luddite Memorial Liversedge

Luddite Memorial at Liversedge West Yorkshire the statue is of a cropper and his daughter holding on to her fathers apron.
Luddite's were English workers who destroyed machinery, especially in cotton and woollen mills, which they believed was threatening their jobs (1811–16).
On April 11, 1812, around 150 Luddites, attacked the Rawfolds mill in Liversedge with hammers and axes, but were repulsed by the owner, William Cartwright, who had fortified the building and had the help of militia. Two Luddites were shot and the croppers fled, at Roberttown, the two injured men died. Many arrests were made and 17 men were later hanged for their part in the uprisings.

Love the sculpture. I don.t remember much from history st school but I Do remember the luddites. How dreadful to be hanged for a protest.

@quietpurplehaze Thank you for your comments Hazel we did a lot on the industrial revolution at school so I learned all about the Luddite's, it was a tough life for working people then. in 1840 striking workers in Preston were shot by the army see my image and narrative on this link, http://365project.org/pcoulson/365/2014-06-27

@dide Thanks Dianne for your comment, its a little over actual size and appears to be in stainless steel, as can be seen it stands out well in the sunlight, it was a really tough time for working families in those days:)

Very cool capture - and story. I wonder if there were luddite painters who rose up against the photographers!

@stray_shooter Ha Ha Ron an interesting point, from books I've read on the subject, some started as painters, chemists and chancer's trying to make a quick buck selling portraits, and then came along the 365 community, lol:)
