Old Church Tower by pcoulson

Old Church Tower

My entry in this weeks challenge "Filters" I used a Hoya rectangular graduated neutral density filter on this shot of the tower of the old St Matthews Church in the village, this church was built in 1713 and was replaced by a much larger one just 500m along this road, the old church was demolished as it was unsafe in 1973, the tower was saved from demolition by friends of the church who still care it and the grounds today.

I don't know this filter at all...what would the effect be without it?

@suesouthwood Thank you Sue it was quite a grey sky today so went out with a handful of filters to see what I could do, as can be seen the sky looks more blue than grey:)

@granagringa A graduated filter is an add on to the end of your lens as there is a lot of light above the horizon on a landscape shots it effects the light reading for the land part of the shot, using a graduated filter darkens the bright sky to give a more even light reading in your camera, that,s the best I can explain, see the link Madeline and it will all become much more clear, http://www.martinlawrencephotography.com/articles-tips-locations/articles/how-to-achieve-beautiful-landscape-images-with-a-set-of-graduated-neutral-d

Ah, took me a minute to figure out that it's a graduated filter. My class instructor is constantly extolling the virtues of a graduated gray, so I got one, and have never remembered to bring it to one of the sunset sessions. Kick myself every time. This is a great result - and it really pops on black!

@stray_shooter Thank you for your lovely comments Ron, I seldom use my rectangular filters, but it helped this shot you can just detect some grey at the midpoint, I tend to use my screw on polarising filter most of the time to bring out the blue:)
