I'm guessing it's part of a motorbike, but I don't know which part. I do like the red colour though. :)

Hmmm, I was thinking motorcycle myself, specifically the clutch pak cover. But you describe it as more of a hands on item. The hex nut and threads on the left is a clue, but I'll be jiggered if I can figure it out. I'll come back again before bedtime - just before you awaken!
