I looked up "apricot" in different languages - many are remarkably similar (Mauri is 'aperikota', Swedish 'aprikos', and so on). Strangely the Latin is 'persicum', and the Greek 'βερίκοκο' which are quite different from each other - I'm guessing different roots (I mean no pun) but if you know, please share!
Later edit (20th Aug): I've just seen this shot by Vincent @vincent24 :-
It's from the plum genus (prunus armeniaca) and it was known in Armenia in ancient times, hence the name, but that tends to be an American tag. I heard the root of apricot as a word comes from the same root as precocious and I believe Pliny named it thus because it means "early to ripen" and it turned up ahead of other fruit like peaches. But it seems to have run a very convoluted route of semantics to get to our modern word. Slightly crazy how one word can change so much! Beautiful shot, by the way - can I eat it now?
