Colour House Theatre by peadar

Colour House Theatre

This building forms part of the Merton Abbey Mills leisure site in Colliers Wood, south-west London. The area takes its name from Merton Priory, one of the most important monasteries of the middle ages. The Abbey (or Priory as it was known), was an Augustinian Priory built in the early 12th century. Henry III's queen, Eleanor of Provence and King Henry VI were both crowned there.

The Abbey was surrendered to the Crown in the 1538 Dissolution (Henry VIII) and this building is pretty much all that survives of it above ground. It is a Grade II listed building and was converted to a small Theatre around 20 years ago.

Beautiful brick and stone building. Our glass houses will not survive so much.

Great shot! I live a short drive from Abbey Mills, although I used to be within walking distance. The weekend market and the secondhand bookshops (long since gone) were great... fings ain't wot they used to be!

What a fabulous use of that building - I bet it feels great to be inside! I love theatres in small spaces, so intimate and you feel so much more a part of the action.

You've greatly captured a colorfull scene here. I like the texture of the Theatre. This pic has a pleasant chaotic-ish and arty feel to it which I like :-)
