I pass this Victorian era cemetery frequently on my way to and from work and the railway station. It struck me immediately as a place where aspirations ran high - tall spires, columns and stone memorials seemed to be reaching for the sky...
This is Layton Cemetery - established in 1873 after population growth in the Victorian era had overwhelmed Blackpool parish church with demand for burial plots. It runs to 30 acres, but even so, by the 1930's it was itself nearing capacity and so a new municipal cemetery was established elsewhere. The result is that this place seems frozen in time, and very firmly of its time. The chapel you see here is one of three that were originally provided for Anglican, Catholic and Non-Conformist communities (this is the Anglican one).
Many thanks for your recent comments, favs, suggestions and asides. All are welcome and very gratefully received.
