Huddersfield Broad Canal Lock no 1 by peadar

Huddersfield Broad Canal Lock no 1

On my travels today I spied this canal and river junction and had to stop to take a few photos. This is the start of the Huddersfield Canal (Lock No 1) which joins with the Calder & Hebble Navigation near Dewsbury. The Huddersfield Canal provided a link between Yorkshire and Manchester over the Pennines but this broad section (14' wide) is fairly short, and 6km from here the canal narrows to 7'. This is the reason the canal never really prospered, as the alternative Rochdale Canal was broad (14' wide) from Manchester through to Sowerby Bridge.

I've processed this in line with my recent shots from Yorkshire. Slightly desaturated, but warm toned and higher contrast.

Many thanks for all of your recent comments - all very much appreciated.

Lovely image Peter. Hope you don't mind if I make a couple of suggestions about how you could improve this shot. I don't often do this, but I've been working at a similar location trying to get a winning image at our local camera club.
I like this, the setting, reflections, the leading in lines, and the processing, but that pylon is all wrong. I was going to suggest you might clone it out. However, looking at it for a bit longer, I think if you just cropped it between the pylon and that smaller tree on the horizon, you would find you had a totally different image.

@markp Thanks for the suggestion Mark.
