We're at Atherston, on the Coventry Canal, and have to negotiate a "flight" of 11 locks. A "flight" is a group of locks bunched closely together (to overcome a particular geographic feature). We have actually tied up half way down the flight to enjoy Atherstone's attractive facilities overnight. This is the lock-keeper's cottage at Lock 4. This was a busy lock-flight, and this substantial cottage has some additional offices tagged on, making me think this was the main office, perhaps for the entire flight of locks.
Just before we reached Atherstone we passed by Mancetter, a very old Roman-era settlement; one theory has this was the location of the last great battle between the Roman Army of Emperor Nero's Governer Paulinus Suetonius and the British Warrior Queen Boudicca, in AD60 or 61.
Like this and it brings back great memories of canal boat holidays. Sadly my wife can no longer mange getting on and off the boat or the stairs to go below. Happy days so thanks for the memory.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us,
Ian
