Sacra Infermeria

Extras: more from our Malta trip.

The Sacra Infermeria, or the ‘Holy Infirmary’, was a state-of-the-art hospital at the time of its establishment by the Order of the Knights of Malta in 1574. It was also one of the largest, with over 600 beds. It had advanced levels of hygiene (by the standards of the day) and, by all accounts, a pretty tolerant and inclusive admissions policy!
What an interesting building - thanks for the history.
