I was again in London on business, and walked through this area which featured here a week or so ago. This is a housing development by the Peabody Housing Association, which was established in the mid-19th century by American banker George Peabody who had settled in London and developed a great affection for it. He established the fund which was the precursor to the Housing Association with the aim to "ameliorate the condition of the poor and needy of this great metropolis, and to promote their comfort and happiness".
This development was built soon afterwards. One claim to historical fame is that Mary Ann Nichols, the first of the murders attributed to "Jack the Ripper", lived here before separating from her family and moving to Whitechapel where she met her grisly end. More pleasant to note it that the prominent Labour politician, George Brown, who served in Cabinet posts in the 1960's and 70's, grew up here.
I was struck by the architectural comparison between this, and the Inner Temple, a mile or so away in distance, but much more distant in terms of demographic and history. See my main album shot here: http://365project.org/peadar/365-2019-20
