This is a very unusual feature on the UK canal system. Usually locks have manually operated balance gates at either end, like the pair seen in the foreground here. Sometimes there is electrical assistance. But the far gate here is a drop-down guillotine, winch operated; I think this must have been because there was no room to install balance gates around the road bridge. It might also have been a vanity project on the part of the engineer!
Ah, that’s interesting ; what you call a ‘guillotine’ lock is quite common in the Netherlands...what an appropriate name, by the way ; wonder how it’s called in Dutch ...
I do always wonder if this kind of gate is as good at holding the water back with its horizontal join, but no doubt it does. Nice shot
