Caution: Train Crossing

This level crossing dates back to the mid-19th century, but is now be-decked with all the safety features you might expect of the modern world after a near-fatal accident in April 2015.
Bet there are still some people who try to beat the barriers!

A month ago an ambulance drove into the descending barrier. They were trapped on the crossing. Instead of escaping from the car, they tried to maneuver. The result - two fatalities and one seriously injured.

Good timing

Like your timing, is this an automatic crossing of one of those hand opperated? We came across several of the last version during our visit to Kent a few years back.

@jacqbb Hi Jacq, it's automated. I admit to being a bit of a sucker for anything to do with trains, but there's something about a level crossing that is quite special. It also reminds me very much of a canal lock; something which enforces stillness on at least some of the participants!

I bet it has a sounding bell or such- for auditory signal as well ? Its much safer than the one we have in our rural town ! And people have had accidents on the crossing.

@fr1da Yes, all the lights flash and there is an audible alarm whilst the booms are in operation. There has been quite a focus on these crossings in the UK over the past 10 years. Many in rural areas (like this) were un-manned and had little safety equipment or procedures. I believe the Government asked the rail operators to make them all automatic with gates and proper safety features after a series of accidental deaths and suicides.
