East Farleigh Station by peadar

East Farleigh Station

One for the Trains album! The station building dates to 1844 when the line was opened, and is in the style associated with the South Eastern Railway of white "Kentish clapboard". Originally it would have been provided with a slate roof, but this has long since been replaced with corrugated asbestos. Few of these original station buildings survive.

You can see here a crossing-keeper's hut at the end of the platform, built in the original style although I am uncertain whether this was original or added later when road traffic increased.
I know a few of these, but they are one of the biggest sources of accidents for Network Rail, so they are being replaced with bridges wherever they can.

A building of history and character. Not so many left now.

Some rail stations in Australia look like this clapboard with similar pitched roofs- and old wooden houses in rural areas too. We also have the boom gates over the roads. Lovely line patterns !
