My sweet husband surprised me with a new camera yesterday! It's definitely a step up from my point and shoot. I'll be working my way through the owner's manual for a few days. I'm so excited! This camera reminds me of my old 35mm Pentax from a couple of decades ago. :)
Congrats. He has great taste. Good luck with the manual, I'm still discovering buttons on my camera I didn't know existed and I've had it for 2 years :)

Thanks to all for your kind comments! I'm anxious to learn how to use my new toy...I never even read the user's manual with my P&S...don't think I'll be able to get away with that with this camera.
@Madeline - happy for the good review. Hope I do as well with mine as you produce with yours! @Karen - Ha...Tom's a good guy. Guess that's why we've made it 35 years and counting. Yikes...that makes me sound so old!! @Glyn - I think the Man of Mystery photo clinched this camera for me! At least the timing seemed to jive. :) @Robin - I love my P&S - this new one is slightly intimidating! @Carole - lovely husbands are treasures...as you know! @Fiona - it surprised the heck out of me! I think I'll keep Tom around. :) @Kris - Thanks for the good wishes!
@pennewolf
Thanks, Penne! I think I was being a bit optimistic when I said I was going to spend "a few days" with the user's manual! Looking through it I see I have A LOT to learn. :)
Yay!! So exciting Peggy! You will absolutely love it. I made it through the first twenty pages of my manual, but that was during the summer. I had to laugh, because my husband just pointed out that maybe I should try watching the discs that came with it. He said they might be easier to understand :-P
@petersonsheri
Yep...those pesky manuals! Photography 101 for me. I don't think I'll get by without reading and learning it with this camera, unlike the untouched manual of my point and shoot! :)
What a fabulous surprise! I can't believe all the fantastic shots you have using a point and shoot... can't wait to see what you deliver with this! Enjoy it!
Nice!!! Your photography is about to take a new turn! You are going to love this camera!!! I have one too. Right now I'm obsessed with my other one my Cannon Rebel but my Nikon is pretty awesome too! I go back and forth. I also like my pocket point and shoot....that's a pretty decent one.
Good stuff... I bought this for work (although I use it more for personal stuff than work stuff) and it's a great camera... the silhouette re-set mode takes some really good shots - always worth a quick mess about with. Be careful to turn the view finder though, as it easily scratches...
Congrats! Although I'm a Canon man myself, I sometimes wish I'd started with Nikon, as there are SO many more people with them that it's easier to find second hand lenses and accessories with Nikon than with Canon. Can't wait to see what you come out with!
@andycoleborn I'm a man and I've read my manual probably 4 times now. But then again it's sitting in the magazine rack next to our toilet, and it's either I read that or I read some womens' magazine.
good for u , ur hubby is a keeper !!!
great camera my best mate has the same one and she is doing some amazing stuff with hers. looking forward to ur new work
I love my 5000. Have had mine for about 1.5 years. Here are to good books you might want to take a look at: Nikon D5000 from Snapshots to Great Shots and Nikon D5000 for Dummies.
@chrissyb
Thanks, Christine! I really appreciate the good review and the book recommendations! I'm going to place an order on amazon.com right now. I checked out your album ~ beautiful photos!!
I had this photo up when I stepped away from the computer to brush my daughter's teeth. My husband came in the bathroom and said, "Is this some sort of hint?" Made me laugh. Have fun with your new camera!
@andycoleborn
Thanks, Andy. I like seeing another good review of the d5000! I think I'm going to have fun with it! I checked your album - fabulous photos! Hope I can do as well with my camera. :)
@isisweiss
Uh oh...the critics are waiting!! :) Actually, I haven't had much time to play with it yet. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see what I can come up with that could be post worthy. I'm loving your farm animals, Isis! Where is the farm?
If your camera has a sports setting (on my Canon it is a guy skiing) you will fall in love with it. It shoots many shots per second, and it captures things in motion. I used it to get pictures of birds in flight this summer, like my Hummingbirds, and it was amazing.
@petersonsheri
It does have a sports setting which is fabulous for rapid fire shots. I can also go into release mode and set burst shooting for all settings. Love to hear that quick progression of clicks...makes me feel like a professional. :) Now maybe next spring I can capture the elusive hummingbird!
Isn't it fun! There's just something so awesome about that click click click!! The only problem I have with it is that I find myself taking over one hundred pictures a day, and trying to scale it down to one. Time flies when you're on 365!
