My photography workshop yesterday at a state park with sand dunes was great fun and a great learning opportunity. I found it very helpful to take a class in the field rather than a classroom. Obviously, we could talk about camera settings and composition as it applied to the lighting and scene. The desert landscape offered abundant photo opportunities; I came home with almost 500 images! It's difficult to choose just a few to share here. However, I liked this one of a lone tree with a dune behind it. It's a quintessential desert scene to me, simple but beautiful. More to come...
Live workshops are great, but are expensive and often difficult to manage time-wise; if you are not aware of CreativeLive, check it out. They have free classes on photography going on all the time if you watch live [they also have free repeats the same day]. They are usually so good that I often end up buying access at any time. Their prices are very reasonable compared to traveling to an elite seminar somewhere far away. Best wishes.
@morrisroos Thank you for this information, Don. I will definitely check it out! I was lucky that the dunes are just a couple hours away from where I live. It was a really affordable day outing so I was thrilled to participate. It will be great to have classes available on line, too.
Here is a list of recent and upcoming photography classes: camera specific classes, Lightroom, Photoshop, portrait, wedding, etc. http://www.creativelive.com/courses/filter?tid_1[]=6&date_filter[min][date]=&date_filter[max][date]=
I have bought many of them because they are such great teachers. You just view free when live and decide whether to continue or even to buy at a reasonable price. It is another example of the internet's market disruptive ability that can change everything for the consumer [and the seller]. It is no longer necessary to learn photography by trial and error or by buying a 10grand National Geographic seminar at a wonderful site. I have no affiliation or ownership of CL. Best wishes.
What a great shot and a wonderful share! That workshop sounds so appealing. I was signed up to go on my very first photography workshop in Missouri this April, but had to cancel due to an unfortunate schedule conflict. It would also have been in the field. Sooooo disappointed!
Wow - didn't you have a great time!
I know exactly what you mean about learning in the field - it all sinks in so much better if you can put it into practice while you're being taught.
Terrific shot - love the composition, simplicity and colours. Fav.
This is wonderful! And what a great opportunity you had. One of these days, I'll have to do something like that. Anyhow, I love the composition and the colors - the way the dunes contrast with the sky. All around wonderful shot!

The class sounds like a fantastic learning opportunity!
