I went on a photography class outing today to a prairie to photograph wild flowers. We stopped at an abandoned farmhouse on the way where I took this shot. I liked the colors and textures in the weathered wood and the old doorknob. Someone at one time had closed the door to this place and never returned, leaving furnishings and personal items behind. The inhabitants now are the four legged variety!
This is wonderful - love the textures. Places that are just abandoned, complete with possessions are so haunting.I remember visiting Bodie, the ghost town, when I was about 13, and it made such an impression on me that I never forgot it. When I took my family there a couple of years ago it had exactly the same effect on my younger son.
A beautiful capture, with the tones so appealing, and the texture incredible! I also like how you chose to capture it horizontally whereas we typically imagine doors vertically. Your narrative of the abandoned place that looks like someone left unexpectedly leaves you wondering why . . .
That's a bit sad and mysterious but as so many people have pointed out makes a wonderful photographic subject. Look forward to seeing the other shots too Lisa.
@taz_o I agree completely. That's how it felt here, too. I have heard that Bodie is a really interesting place. Would love to visit someday. Where do you live, Tamzin?
@pflaume I'm in London, but I spent a lot of time in the US as a child and we've had a couple of family holidays there in the last few years. Definitely recommend Bodie!
@fishy Sorry for not responding to you sooner, Andrew. I did not go inside nor did I want to. One of the windows was broken so I keep my head inside and the smell of animal feces was very overpowering. Pack rat nests were clearly visible in the seats of old armchairs. We didn't see any animals but I figured that most were nocturnal and I didn't want to wake them.
Sad about the abandonment - makes one wonder what happened.
