UNDER THE CANAL BRIDGES by phil_howcroft

UNDER THE CANAL BRIDGES

Lunchtime walk at work again !

Mobile phone picture again !

Oh no not that Canal again ! Find another location Phil !

Well it's difficult at lunch time, I only get a 30 minute lunch break, so I cannot get that far away from my desk, but this little stretch of canal is offering a few photo opportunities for me.

A difficult lighting situation here with the sun hitting the bridge and the dark area under the bridge and a bright sky above the bridge.

I've brightened the image up a bit so you can see details under the bridge. If you look carefully you can see the curved arch of the original bridge underneath the modern concrete structure carrying the road above it.

I could have done with somebody walking underneath the bridge or loitering underneath it, but this is what presented itself to me in my quick lunch !

I promise not to post any canal pictures tomorrow and will use some better equipment, but my mobile phone is doing me quite proud at the moment

Too bright ? Too grey ? Too boring ?
Cool shot! You've got a pleasant place to walk.

Thanks Al, It's not that pleasant, the canal is rather dirty and I don't always feel that safe being there on my own !

Great shot! I like B/W effect too! We don't have them here.

Phil, I love your descriptions - "Oh no not that Canal again" had me laughing. When you've got a great place to shoot, then go with it! I love the fact you can see a great reflection all the way at the other opening to the tunnel. It's nice to get out and walk at lunchtime, too. :)

..well the curved tree shadows make it worth while.
I'm on quite a limited oppertunities photo wise too for a while and only with my phone.. lots of work related..

I Like you capture. Great b&w

@meredithwb Meredith, thank you very much. I like to put a detailed narrative about my photos as it gives the image context and I like to make my comments a bit light hearted too. I sometimes get a bit carried away with my descriptions though !

Glad you like the image, I've took quite a nice one from the other side of the bridge too, but I'll have to retake the other side on another days posting :) Thanks again

@sleepdozer57 Thanks Peter, I am restricted to a mobile phone when at the office, but if the light is decent they can do quite well.

@libellula Libellula, thank you, I'm pleased you think it is a good black and white image :)
March 8th, 2011
It's not at all boring..I love the contrast and lighting ..makes a very good black & white image.
March 8th, 2011
Thanks Patsy, I like my black and whites to have a lot of contrast, but had to retain a tad too much brightness to keep the details underneath the bridge. Thanks again

great relections and I love the shadows from the surrounding trees. Lovely B&W great composition
March 8th, 2011
Juliette thank you vey much, I never realised the shadows were in the foreground as I was concentrating on looking through the tunnel

I, too, like the tree shadows. It's fun to shoot the same scene on different days in different weather/light. Maybe we'll "get to" see the canal yet again in a whole other way?

I like the canal shots. This is a really nice one and likeit in the black and white with the great contrasts. It works for me!
March 9th, 2011
I like it too. The black and white is fine and your perspective is very good.
March 9th, 2011
@sbconifer Sheryl, thank you for commenting. I've managed to get a different location on each of my canal pictures, so I am tring to keep it fresh ! The summer 'greens' should make for some more images in a few months

@seattle Cheers Constance, I was not too sure about posting the image as I did not think it had enough interest in it.
March 9th, 2011
@wac Thanks Wendy , getting the right perspective can be difficult at times
March 9th, 2011
I love the black and white in this photo it really brings out the cool shadows!
March 9th, 2011
@jupton8 Thanks Julie, kind of you to comment, black and white always seems to work well for me
March 9th, 2011
@gill Thanks Gill, I'm pleased you like it. As for managing the lighting well, I think the camera did most of that . I did have to move my slider contrast and brightness slider bars quite a bit in photoshop elements to get the details to show up under the bridge.

I still think your tunnel is better :)

Nice. I like the arch and the reflection in the back. Great capture.
