This is my first attempt at colour popping (selective colouring) in an image.
I drive by this junction about three times a week when returning home from the office.
On Sunday I was a passenger in the car as my daughter was driving us home from a day out.
This is Junction 9 of the M42 northbound as it approaches the M6 toll (For none UK viewers we have very few 'toll' / 'pay' roads in the UK) .
This may look like a straightforward junction but if you stay in the right hand lane for the M42 and M1 and you are not concentrating you can easily end up on the M6 toll road.
The reason for the confusion is that the lane all of a sudden splits into two lanes with no white lines to guide you either way. It's the only motorway junction that I've travelled on that has this strange set up (use the magnifying glass to see what I mean).
I've 'colour popped' it because the blue sign is the direction I take on my journey home to Nottingham and this image will remind me to concentrate hard !
The image is shot from the passenger seat of the car, through a slightly murky windscreen at 70 miles per hour. I think it's turned out OK. I had to crop and rotate the image slightly because the overhead gantry signs were not straight in the original image.
It's very grainy in the monochrome section and I don't think my colour popping stands up to a great deal of inspection.
Hope you like it ...Oh and btw, to date I've managed to concenrate well at this junction and never drifted into the M6 toll !
I'm glad you clarified that you took this from the passenger seat, and not while driving at 70mph!! I've yet to have a go at colour popping, so well done on your first one :o)
@judithg Ha Ha Judith, I think it's one of the worst junctions on the motorway network, in fact if we were being unkind you might think that it was designed that way so that people drift into the toll and therefore more income is generated for the toll road !
@sarahhorsfall Thanks Sarah, I know we're all keen to get a good shot on here , but I would never consider doing a photo at 70 mph while driving !! Our roads are far too dangerous. Glad you like the colour popping, it's hard doing it with mouse controlled with a laptop touch pad !
@sleepdozer57 Thanks PEter, colour popping is not too difficult provided what you are popping is a sensible shape. I quite like road shots too, I've took some pictures from front window of our local double decker bus into Nottm - you get some great shots from there providing the windows are clean :)
I tried colour popping today for the first time too (but didn't post it)...great fun. I love your street scene, and the blue pop works so well in this shot
ha ha Phil, this is a great shot - you just don't know how many times i've ended up going on the wrong lane and ended up facing completely the opposite direction than I want to go...and then it's miles to turn around and you face the same dilemma again!!! selective colouring might be a good suggestion to the Highways Agency - and colour the M42 bit of road in too!!
@sparkle Juliette, thanks, I've been doing this stretch of road since January. From the NEC to this point you need to really concentrate on you lanes otherwise you could be going M6 north, M6 south, M6 toll or end up on an 'A' road !
You have taken up one of my habits..shooting photos going down the road ha! I love the use of color in this photo and it turned out really well going that fast down the road. I have a hard time driving on the interstates here..too use to the country roads.
Oh I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a confusing junction. I'm from the Midlands and on a visit back "up north" to Lichfield via Tamworth I managed somehow to get on the toll road - it was an experience anyway :) Great use of selective colouring, nice shot :)
@gill Gill, I think you are right, selective colouring would certainly work well to help avoid the confusion :) Thanks for commenting, your support is much appreciated
Phil, can I post here a video :))) - enjoy :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAvysNe4swM&feature=related
Not tried the colour popping effect, will have to look into it.
@vvpe like the video clip.
Your photo is amazing. I like it very much. A fav :)
@sleepdozer57 road shots are always great
