The 96 by phil_howcroft

The 96

Football grounds all over England held a minutes silence at 15:06 today, to remember the 96 Liverpool fans who died at the Hillsborough 25 years ago.

Being a football fan in the 1980's was a pretty bad experience. Many football grounds were not fit for purpose, we stood on terraces behind high fences, often in pens and were generally treated with little respect.

There have been other football disasters in recent years: The Bradford fire, The Ibrox disaster and going back even further the Burnden disaster at Burnden Park (the former home of Bolton Wanderers). My Dad and Grandfather were at the Burnden disaster in March 1946 when 33 Bolton fans died following the collapse of barriers.

The Hillsborough disaster remains in the public eye, probably because the families of the dead are still seeking the truth and closure on what happened 25 years ago.

This shot shows Bolton and Barnsley players stood in the centre circle during the minutes silence. I selectively coloured the jerseys of the Barnsley players to emphasise the red of Liverpool.
Wonderful use of SC for this situation! Its a great photo - you can see the stripes on their socks!

SC used to great effect here Phil.......also wonderfully informative comment about football history. I hadn't realised there were so many tragic events going back so far. So many lives lost in a game of football.

Nicely shot to remember such a moment full of tragic memories.

Great SC here Phil. Yes sad times - the more you hear the morning shocking it is in many ways. Had to watch a video of the Bradford fire for a fire safety course once - things they wouldn't show on the telly. Horrific and they still haven't found people who seem to have been locked in somewhere.

@judithg thanks judith, i sat in the wooden stand at Bradford in the late 70's, looking back at to how the fire started, I'm surprised it never happened before.
