100 Strangers : Round 2 : No. 103 : Jay by phil_howcroft

100 Strangers : Round 2 : No. 103 : Jay

It has been Nottingham Mela this weekend, with the event finale taking part at Nottingham Castle.

Nottingham's annual South Asian celebration is the oldest Mela in the country and has been running since 1988.

We went to the castle and I was hoping I could find a stranger to continue my second round of 100 strangers.

Meet Jay, who I saw walking around the castle, looking very cool with his striking outfit , hair and glasses.

As Jay walked down the hill from the castle towards the bandstand, I stopped Jay and introduced myself as an amateur photographer doing a project on street photography, photographing strangers.

Jay was pleased to take part in the project.

I told Jay I wanted a none cluttered background and as I looked around the castle grounds I noticed a Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue information stall,. When i say stall it was a big red wagon / lorry and thought it would make a good backdrop.

"Do you mind moving over towards the red fire and rescue stall, I think it will be good against your outfit?"

"OK, I will go with your colour combo, if you think Red and Purple works"

"Yes, I think it will work well. What's with your purple outfit ? What's it all about ?"

"Today I am the Purple Prince"

"Purple Prince?"

"Yes, I am actually the compère for todays events. You can find out about me in the programme" (The programme told me that Jay is a choreographer and Dancer)

So we walk over behind the wagon and I am pleased to see it is all red (I was worried it might not be !!!)

So I ask Jay to stand by the vehicle and direct which way he looks,

Jay struck up quite a few poses and was easy to photograph.

I showed Jay some of the pics and he seemed quite impressed.

I asked Jay how he got the job of compère and he said it was down to his friend's Dad (and pointed towards his friend), who had appeared with his iphone camera and was obviously impressed by my choice of backdrop.

So I shook Jay;s hand and gave him one of my little cards.

"I'll email you for the pics Phil " said Jay

When I reviewed the shots on the back of the camera I was pleased with the results.

I've edited this image in Darktable and I am really pleased to post Jay as stranger 103 in my second round of 100 strangers

This picture is number 103 in my second round of my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Another good one, Phil and the colours just remind me of that poem 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple and a red hat.' (Purple Haze meets Purple Prince!!!!!!!!!!!)

He looks and sounds like someone who is comfortable performing. The purple/red combo is just right for the extrovert I'm guessing he may be. Love the hint of cheekiness in the expression and those retro-frame shades. Nice one, Phil.
