This is Sunday morning in Nottingham, before my wife and I went for a tapas lunch. I’d been down into Hockley and the Sneinton Lanes looking for strangers (and found one too, my next stranger).
On my way to meet the wife I noticed a young lady smoking a cigarette in a doorway, she looked really cool in her beanie hat and glasses and I thought she would make a great stranger. So I walked past her and got my camera out of my bag. When I walked back to the doorway she’d gone !
“Oh no never mind” I thought. Then as I walked around the corner I saw her again stood near a bin smoking her cigarette. So I approached her
“Hi, I wonder if you could help me, I’m an amateur photographer and I do street photography, taking pictures of people I meet on the street. I think you look really cool in your hat and glasses, is it OK if I take your photo?”
“Yes of course, no one has ever asked to take my photo before”
“Would you mind walking over to the side street, it’s in the shade and a good location”
“Yes how shall I stand”
“Stand with your back to the wall and look over your shoulder to me”
Meet Iulia, I thought from her accent she was from North America, but she’s from Romania “A lot of Romanian people talk with an accent like mine said Iulia.
“Are you over 18, I asked as I was taking her photos” (maybe I should have asked that question first) !
“By almost a decade” she replied.
Iulia works as a graphic designer / animator. She is very talented too (looking at her instagram account). In fact she produced the front page to one of the recent editions of the “Left Lion” (a printed and online culture and listings magazine which covers Nottingham).
We bumped fists and I thanked Iulia for her time.
I took several photos of Iulia, and I'm not sure which was my fave, I will post another one in a few days , which I know you will all like
You have all the talent of being a street photographer! I recently went to a photo review where the reviewer stated that "making an introduction" is really the key to a great shot when working with strangers.
