Just home from a fabulous couple of days in North Yorkshire where both Carole and I are photographed out.
This photograph, of Rievaulx Abbey (An English Heritage Site) taken from Rievaulx Terrace (a National Trust Site) is my photograph for today.
Pronounced "Ree-Vo," Rievaulx Abbey was founded in 1132 by twelve monks who came over from France. It was the first Cistercian Abbey in the north of Yorkshire, and in keeping with the Cistercian ways, it is in the middle of nowhere and was a very austere building and lacking of decoration. In time, it became one of the great Abbeys of England and very wealthy. And, like many others, it was sacked in 1538 by Henry VIII during the 'disution and the land and buildings were sold off to the then Earl of Rutland (less the precious metals and lead which the king kept for himself)
The abbey, in my opinion more than rivals Fountains Abbey (which is where Carole and I went on Friday (before the waterfalls) in its grandness and with what is still standing.

Wow! A lovely piece of history photographed beautifully! Thank you for the interesting information too! Photographed out?!? I have not experienced that...yet! Fav.
Nice shot. I agree with you, Rievaulx is my favourite over Fountains. It's in the most amazing location. Them monks certainly knew about location, location, location.
@paul10@royrj I think it was a measure of the Cistercian Order, it had to be out of the way, far from mankinds usual level of civilisation. Rievaulx is in the middle of nowhere - the monks, even back in 1132, diverted the flow of the river, not once but twice, to provide more room for their buildings. As @royrj says, 'them monks knew what they were doin'"
@paul10 About 1.5 hours from Grimsby buddy - worth the trip one day?

I get the 'photographed out' bit. It happens to me sometimes.
