portland bill is a narrow promontory (or bill) at the southern end of the isle of portland, and the southernmost point of dorset, in southwest england. you should be able to make it out on the horizon in the centre of this image. portland bill and chesil beach have been notorious for the many vessels that became shipwrecked in the area over the centuries. the dangerous coastline, which features shallow reefs and the shambles sandbank, was proven more hazardous due to the strong tidal race known as the portland race. the bill is still an important way-point for coastal traffic, and three lighthouses have been built to protect shipping, in particular from its strong tidal race and shallow reef. the original two lighthouses guided vessels around the coast from 1716, until they were replaced in 1906 by the current lighthouse. thanks to wikipedia - and to 365 for making me check all this out. beautiful walk in sunshine this morning with great company
update september 2020 ...
decided that, after five-and-a-half years on this fabulous site, I should say a little more about myself than the two sentences...
When I was a little boy, I spent endless summers in Lulworth Cove; my dad worked out a deal, getting a tiny cottage for a peppercorn rent in exchange for renovating it. Very happy memories of this part of the world, and this exact scene is inside my head; I knew exactly where it was without your saying!
It was a museum, and now I think it's a sweetshop. If you ever go there, please take a photograph of the Doll's House!
