lucky enough to be part of a guided tour of st paul's cathedral. there was a frustration in that photography is banned throughout, but the guide said we could shoot the geometric staircase if we were quick! unlike many spiral staircases, this has no central column and seems to float in space. apparently the light and shadow are delightful on a sunny day. i liked it in b&w, but decided to stay with the unexpected blue that came out in the colour version
update september 2020 ...
decided that, after five-and-a-half years on this fabulous site, I should say a little more about myself than the two sentences...
I love circles. This is lovely. Nicely done, under pressure. I recall the "no photos" rule at St. Paul's. Very frustrating. I must confess to being a scofflaw on that point, during our visit. ;)

well wowzer thanks all so much for all that encouragement and interest! i must confess i have rarely shot a staircase and i was delighted to get this @rosiekerr haha rosie your comment made me laugh. i had never heard the word scofflaw before and it is destined to become a firm favourite. i wish i had your courage - i would not have dared raise my camera ;) @ingajohansson the guide said that the dean got tired of people taking selfies in front of the altar and during services - and decided to ban photography altogether. a great shame, in my view, especially since i spent some considerable time in washington cathedral in september enjoying it with my camera. there are lots of volunteers roaming about and i don't see why they couldn't ask people politely to keep away from the altar, and not take photos during services. all the more galling was that i saw several people taking sneaky shots with their iPhones, while i was reluctantly behaving myself!
