hero

spent the weekend with some dear friends on their farm in leicestershire. hero is one of their ten bucket calves and had just enjoyed her milk. i'm ashamed to say my knowledge of farming mostly comes from listening to the archers, so it was quite wonderful to hear about their life and see it in action. the sheep escaped, one of the calves wouldn't feed, the bull samson had just been let into the field and had been servicing the cows all day ... the rich pattern of life laid out for us townies ...
Lovely soulful portrait. Fav. Love your charming commentary, as well.

I love the scene you paint with your narrative - and had a bit of a giggle about the archers. Listening to tonights episode , I thought - for the umpteenth time - just why do I keep listening to this programme? But I just can't help it! Much better to have a weekend on the farm for real, and the young calf in your picture confirms that.

What a darling calf. I hope she enjoyed the milk from her mama. I recently found out that most of the milk cows in America do not feed their young but the young are separated from their mothers...so very sad! I don't drink cows milk or eat meat.
