we visited the stunning stained glass windows at the tudeley cum capel church in kent at the weekend. sir henry and lady d'avigdor-goldsmid commissioned chagall to create the east window in honour of their daughter sarah, who died aged just 21 in a sailing accident off rye. chagall, who came to stained glass relatively late in his career, was initially reluctant to take on the commission, but was eventually persuaded - and when in 1967 he arrived for the installation of the east window and saw the church, he said, 'It's magnificent. I will do them all.' over the next 15 years chagall designed all the remaining eleven windows, collaborating as usual with glassworker charles marq of reims. the chancel windows were finally installed in 1985, the year of chagall's death at the age of 98. we saw them in the very dingy light of storm ciara but even then they glowed most gorgeously, powerfully and movingly. i would love to return to see them in full sunshine
update september 2020 ...
decided that, after five-and-a-half years on this fabulous site, I should say a little more about myself than the two sentences...
Beautiful shot !
I knew Chagall did a lot of stained glass Windows but never seen any of them outside France. ( I’ve always been impressed he started with ceramics and glass quite late in life, in his seventies, actually...imagine that 💪)
