This here is the redback spider - one of the most dangerous spiders in Australia and possibly the world.

This one redback was quite sizeable - her body was about the side of my thumbnail.

The only reason why I was brave enough to get this close was because she'd been doused with bugspray moments before. xD

Don't touch it !!!!!
Is it like the black widow?

Yikes! It is intimidating even doused in bugspray! Really great macro....amazing detail.
February 27th, 2012
love it! great dof and awesome colours. I was bitten by one at Stradbroke Island one time, was a weird and rather scary experience. I had it in my hat of all places! @isaloha they're very closely related (both in the genus Latrodectus)
February 27th, 2012
Great shot!! Not to keen on them here!!
February 27th, 2012
Teresa - Excellent macro and very interesting subject. I lived in Sacramento, California and the first house that my wife and I rented had many "Black Widow" spiders in the garage. They have a red "hour glass" shape on their underside. My wife was bitten by one when she was younger.
February 27th, 2012
fav btw
February 27th, 2012
Such a great closeup - does look like a black widow with its hourglass markings!
February 27th, 2012
Spooky!
February 27th, 2012
Wow, you're much braver than me, bug spray or not! Brilliant shot though, the colours and detail is fantastic!
February 27th, 2012
So I guess in the northern hemisphere the black widows have the hour glass under them and in the Southern hemisphere they have them on top..each hour glass is "pointing" to the equator.
February 27th, 2012
great shot ... i was once bitten by one of these little things but luckily enough im still here to tell the story.
February 27th, 2012
This has great detail Teresa, can see the red bit so clear.
I'm starting to not mind spider shots so much...my golden orb fro Jan 23rd is still going well. I couldn't kill him now!! But as far as I know the orbs are not poisoness
February 27th, 2012

February 27th, 2012

February 27th, 2012
you're a brave girl. Spiders give me the heebie-jeebies anyway, I can't imagine I would do well with a deadly one! Great shot and you're my new hero.

February 27th, 2012

February 27th, 2012
A spider I like to avoid. wicked shot
February 27th, 2012
@aspada there hasn't been a fatal bite in more than 50 years. I was on an island so decided to wait til I got back to the mainland, and by that time the immediate symptoms had subsided. The weird thing was that an area around the bite kept sweating, it was running into my eyes for days! :)
February 27th, 2012
@aspada there's an antivenom which is very effective, and the reason why there hasn't been a single death since 1956!
February 27th, 2012
great shot... but i wish i didnt read... so pleased to live in Ireland where I think the worst that can happen that includes any animals is some sheep blocking the country road...no idea how you live with all the snakes and insects all over the place...
February 27th, 2012

This photo is wrong on so many levels ... HATE spiders!

And apart from educational pictures etc, this is possibly the first I've actually "seen" one ... thankfully I haven't had the pleasure here ... have had the pleasure of huntsmen racing up my arm ... not fun!
